ERP Consulting: Ensuring a Positive Experience

Implementing ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software can be an arduous process. And, if your staff is not prepared, the associated costs can grow?exponentially. An ERP system is intended to integrate internal and external business processes across your entire organization to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions. Without the correct?preparation, the implementation process can end up causing your organization more problems than it solves. Make sure your company is prepared with these tips:

1. Do Your Homework:

Before choosing a consultant, outline what you already have and what you need. Complete an audit of your current systems and note:

  • What is working for your organization and what isn?t
  • What your company needs from a consultant
  • What are your must have?s
  • Where are you willing to compromise
  • Create a firm budget
  • Outline a?time-frame

Determining this information before calling a consultant will help save time and money during the process.

2. Ensure You Get the Right Fit

No, you?re not tied to the consultant you choose but you do need to be able to work with them. Choose a consultant that meshes well with your team and company culture. Make sure you research the consultants you?re considering as you would a job applicant. The individual (or team) and company should have relevant experience and good references. Hiring the right consultant can greatly effect the success of your implementation.

3. Make a Plan

Before you begin, create a clear guide to follow for:?compensation? performance indicators, time-frames and budgets. Make sure your team and the consultant team fully understand all the terms so no confusion arises later.

4. Determine the Final Result

Start at the end and decide what you need to see when the project is finished. Outline your expectations for the consultant(s) you?re considering. The right consultant should be able to explain how they achieve the results you?re seeking, set measurable goals and present the final outcome. Be very clear about this from the beginning and monitor throughout the process.

5. Help Out

Your ERP consultant should be an ERP expert and have a working knowledge of your industry. This doesn?t mean they know all the in?s and out?s of your business. Provide knowledge, advice and help when needed so they can fully understand your business from an operation and managerial standpoint. This insight will allow the consultant to provide answers or suggestions to ensure the success of your?implementation. Giving your consultant the necessary help or information can only benefit your?organization.?

Keep these tip in mind for your next ERP consulting adventure and you will have more success. If you?re unsure about the ERP consultant/software selection process please contact us and we will point you in the right direction.
