Writers and Critics Remember Experimental Filmmaker Chris Marker ...

As many of you know by now, Chris Marker, the experimental filmmaker known for the groundbreaking sci-fi film, "La Jetee," passed away on his 91st birthday this past Sunday.

As a multimedia artist and writer, Marker's mesmerizing techniques have become influential benchmarks for filmmakers like Terry Gilliam, whose "Twelve Monkeys" is an expansion of Marker's original 1962 creation. And Marker's use of black and white still shots that tested the viewers concern for time and memory remains paramount to the trajectory of film history, so much so that his films "La Jetee" and "Sans Soleil" have been immortalized in the classic film catalogue, The Criterion Collection.
