UCLA FOOTBALL: First-year coach Mora set to lead new-look Bruins onto the field in season opener against Rice

By Miguel A. Melendez, Special to the Daily News

UCLA called an audible eight months ago when it hired Jim Mora as the 17th head coach in school history. Mora represented a new direction for a program that desperately needed a change in culture. He hit the ground running, hiring coaches and pounding the recruiting trail, all the while injecting a business-like attitude.

Mora's revamped coaching staff called for a new philosophy in scoring and defending. The personnel moves from spring camp carried into fall camp, and Mora further distanced himself from predecessor Rick Neuheisel by naming a redshirt freshman as the starting quarterback.

In short, it's out with the old and in with the new.

UCLA unveils its new look today against Rice in Houston, where Mora will make his college head coaching debut after 25 years in the NFL.

He's more than ready. He's anxious.

"I'm anxious like I'm always anxious," Mora said. "It's going to be my first time going out there in a UCLA shirt and hat in a competitive environment."

Rice (4-8 last year) opens at home for the first time since 2008, and it's the Owls' first game on a weekday since 1983. UCLA is 4-0 all-time against Rice.

They last met in 2006 at the Rose Bowl and the Bruins won 26-16.

UCLA, opening on the road for the third consecutive season, is expected to battle inclement weather in Houston with temperatures reaching a high of 96 with 57percent humidity and a 50percent chance of rain and scattered thunderstorms.

The heat and humidity is nothing new for UCLA after twoweeks of training in triple-digit temperatures in San Bernardino.

UCLA's biggest challenge, however, will come in executing a whole new playbook.

Bruins fans grew frustrated with an offense that ranked 116th in the nation in 2010. A change last year to the Pistol didn't fare much better as UCLA's passing attack ranked 81st behind two injury-prone quarterbacks in Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut. The Pistol misfired and it showed on the scoreboard - the Bruins ranked 88th in points en route to a 6-8 season.

Dubbed the savior, freshman quarterback Brett Hundley has the intangibles rarely seen these days in Westwood. He brings elusiveness and good arm strength.

His ability to extend plays with his legs will only help offset the challenges that come with an inconsistent offensive line.

Young nerves may be an early issue for Hundley who hasn't played a game since the high school playoffs in 2010. But Hundley is in a position that not many young quarterbacks find themselves in, he can turn to Prince and Brehaut, both seniors, for advice on how to handle the pressure.

"Brett Hundley is a young man who can really throw the ball well and runs extremely well and makes great decisions," said Rice coach David Bailiff, entering his sixth season at the helm. "They have a whole lot of people on that team who have starts, but they have a lot of lettermen who have extensive playing time and we know it's a big challenge for us."

There's reason to believe Hundley could thrive in a spread offense, and he has plenty of weapons at his disposal. Jerry Johnson, Shaquelle Evans and Devin Lucien appear to be playmakers at receiver. Tight end Joseph Fauria (6-foot-8) will help create countless mismatches while flanker Steven Manfro adds a wrinkle to an offense that looks to thrive in a fast tempo.

Noel Mazzone is in his first season with the Bruins as offensive coordinator. He brings a wealth of experience and the success to prove it. While at Arizona State, Mazzone last year led the Sun Devils to a top-10 passing offense that averaged 316 yards per game. Arizona State ranked 28th in points, averaging 33.2 points.

UCLA's ground production could wreak havoc against an undersized Rice defensive line. Johnathan Franklin, who is 1,062 yards away from becoming the school's all-time rushing leader, leads a stable of running backs. Damien Thigpen showed all camp he's finally healthy. He brings speed, while Jordon James brings a physical presence.

Hundley could have his hands full with a strong Rice secondary, led by linebacker Cameron Nwosu and cornerback Bryce Callahan, who as a freshman recorded a team-high six interceptions and was named a freshman All-America.

Rice quarterback Tyler McHargue has a big target with 6-5 senior tight end Luke Wilson, but UCLA's 3-4 defense under Lou Spanos could be a challenge for the Owls, who are without their top rushing and receiving threats. Turner Petersen will take the bulk of the carries in the backfield and Vance McDonald will be McHargue's primary target.

Sam McGuffie could be another threat the Bruins have to worry about. He battled injuries last year but showed strong signs in 2010 he can be a big threat after leading the team in receptions (39) and rushing (833 yards).

UCLA's Sheldon Price and Aaron Hester provide proven leadership at corner while Jordan Zumwalt, Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr bring significant size and strength at linebacker.

You can expect UCLA's Datone Jones, Cassius Marsh, Owamagbe Odighizuwa and even Ellis McCarthy to rotate up front defensively with Seali'i Epenesa manning the nose tackle spot.

Rice will have yet another young offensive line to provide pocket protection. Sophomore guard Drew Carroll is the most experienced of the group with 10 starts last season. Nate Richards, a junior college transfer, starts at center and redshirt freshman Caleb Williams is at tackle.

UCLA experienced its own instability on the line during camp but has seen it bolstered in just the last few days with the return of Jeff Baca and Greg Capella, both of whom returned to the field in the final week after suffering concussions early in fall camp.

Ready or not, the lights come on.

"These guys guys haven't been in a competitive environment in over eight months since the bowl game," Mora said. "I'm more than anything excited watching our guys do what they do, which is play football."

How Diana Nyad Prepared to Swim to Cuba [Video] | Greatist

Diana Nyad recently failed to fulfill her childhood dream. For the fourth time. Nyad, who just turned 63-years-old, hit the water to swim 103 miles from Cuba to Florida. The endurance swimmer put an end to her endeavor last week, just over 72 hours after setting out from Cuba. The craziest part? She says it wasn?t her body that gave out on her. It was the jellyfish. This week?s video show?s Nyad before her third attempt at the swim (last summer) in shark infested waters. We get a glimpse at how she mentally grapples with hour-after-hour of propelling herself through the ocean, while her team sits dry and warm in a boat just a few feet away.

What does she do with all of her time in the vast, open waters? She sings songs, counts, and ponders the meaning of life. She breaks up the massive fitness feat into 90-minute chunks (still an incredibly long time to swim with the fishes). While she didn?t make it all the way to Cuba?s shores, Nyad is an inspiration for defeating the odds of age, the elements, and maybe even some ?existential angst.?

What do you think of Nyad?s 103 mile dream? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Let It Be: A Father Sings to Save His Baby Son From Cancer ...

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of fifteen.?46 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. ?

And on July 5th, 2012, 11-month-old, Noah, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Unable to sit back and wait, his father, a musician, recorded this incredible version of ?Let It Be.?

Cancer is touching too may families. ?1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in our country are expected to be diagnosed with it in their lifetimes. ?The cost of cancer care is on the rise, from $104 billion in 2006 to over $173 billion in 2020.??Cancer doctors are so gravely concerned that they have authored op-eds about it in the New England Journal of Medicine, warning that the rates at which cancer is hitting could prove an insurmountable burden to our health care system.

And the rates of pediatric cancer in children, including in 11 month old babies, begs the question: What is going on?

While there are genetic triggers and predisposition, a growing body of scientific research is pointing to the role that toxins, chemicals and other pollutants are having on the health of our families. Organizations like the Environmental Working Group and the Children?s Environmental Health Center at Mt. Sinai are digging into it.

Thank goodness. ?Because we can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to these environmental triggers. ?The health of our country is dependent on the health of our children.

Let them ?Shine until tomorrow, Let It Be???

Please help spread this link?http://www.letitbefornoah.com?because cancer is touching too many lives, taking too many children, and the suffering is immeasurable and has to be stopped. Having looked into the eyes of mothers who have lost their children to this disease, the eyes of the truest of friends whose moms have been diagnosed and into the eyes of the children fighting it, there simply has to be Less Cancer.

Insight: Big Food girds for California GMO fight

LOS ANGELES/KANSAS CITY (Reuters) - After two decades fighting to force U.S. food companies to tell consumers when their products are made with genetically modified organisms, activists in California have mounted what is potentially their most promising offensive to date.

In November, voters in the nation's most populous state will decide whether to require labels on food and drinks containing so-called GMOs, or ingredients that come from plants whose DNA has been manipulated by scientists.

To fight the initiative, seed giant Monsanto Co, soda and snack seller PepsiCo Inc and other opponents of the labeling measure have put up $25 million already and could raise up to $50 million.

Foodmakers, like carmakers, know that what starts in California has a fair chance of becoming the national law, or at least the national norm.

Unbeknownst to many Americans, some of the most popular U.S. GMO crops -- corn, soybeans and canola -- have been staple ingredients for years in virtually every type of packaged food, from soup and tofu to breakfast cereals and chips.

Supporters of the ballot initiative, who include food and environmental activists as well as organic growers, say consumers have the right to know what's in the food they eat and want GMO products cut from the food chain.

A "yes" vote from the Golden State - home to about 10 percent of Americans - could upend the U.S. food business from farm to fork if it prompts makers of popular foods to dump GMO ingredients.

"If a company like Kellogg's has to print a label stating that their famous Corn Flakes have been genetically engineered, it will be the kiss of death for their iconic brand in California...and everywhere else," supporters said in an email seeking donations.

Experts say that campaign bluster might just prove to be true. Polls suggest the labeling proponents could win the vote.

"Ballot measures are the only way to get something like this into law in the United States," Wellesley College political science Professor Rob Paarlberg said.

MONSANTO LEADS COUNTER-OFFENSIVE

Time and again, labeling measures have been soundly defeated in state legislatures because food companies and farmers are well represented by lobbyists, experts said.

Food companies, which a decade ago pulverized an Oregon GMO labeling ballot initiative effort, say labels inaccurately imply that GMOs are not safe and that they are akin to putting a skull and crossbones on food packages.

They call the California measure "flawed and poorly drafted" and say it will raise grocery prices and open food companies and farmers to frivolous lawsuits.

Money is flowing in from around the country and opposition fundraising is outpacing that of supporters by a factor of more than eight-to-one, according to filings with the California Secretary of State.

Contributions from PepsiCo, Kellogg Co, Hershey Co, Hormel Foods Corp, General Mills Inc, Pinnacle Foods Group, Cargill Inc and ConAgra Foods Inc have come fast and furious in recent weeks.

But the big money is coming from the likes of Monsanto, the world's largest seed company and the first to introduce genetically engineered products to farmers.

Its $4.2 million donation is the largest single gift and bolstered other million-dollar contributions from fellow biotech firms like DuPont, Dow AgroSciences, Bayer CropScience Ltd and BASF Plant Science -- which recently announced plans to move its global headquarters to the United States from Germany.

More than 40 countries around the world already have some requirements for labeling of genetically engineered foods. GMOs are deeply unpopular in Europe, which has strict labeling rules and bans many genetically engineered crops.

Because GMOs are widely used in North America, the region is a key market for the biotechnology companies mentioned above -- many of which are divisions of multinational chemical companies.

MIGHT BE CLOSE BATTLE

While Mother Nature does her share of genetic engineering, human interventions have specific goals, such as increasing crop yields or helping plants survive droughts or attacks from pests.

Institutions like the World Health Organization say GMOs pose no risk to human health and that they are essential to producing enough food for the world's booming population. But critics say studies are mixed and that more investigation is needed.

U.S. regulators do not require independent safety testing of GMOs, relying instead on data supplied by developers of those crops. Because foods made with GMOs are not labeled, it is impossible to trace any food allergies or other ill effects suffered by humans or animals, critics say.

In recent years, several scientists have raised alarms about what they say appears to be a growing pattern of problematic health and environmental effects.

Most large food companies aren't headquartered in California and the state's farmers aren't dependent on soy and corn, the "Big Two" GMO crops. That makes the Golden State an ideal place for an aggressive labeling push, Paarlberg said.

Jonathan Foley, director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota said California law "by default, is essentially a national law" and believes this labeling measure has a good chance of passing.

An online survey released Thursday of 811 likely California voters conducted by the California Business Roundtable and Pepperdine University's School of Public Policy showed 65 percent support for the initiative, known as Proposition 37.

California ballot measures that start with support around 60 percent often have a good shot at success, said Michael Shires, a Pepperdine professor who oversees the survey. But victory is not guaranteed.

"Industry has invested a lot of money to oppose it. I would expect that number is going to come down significantly in the next couple weeks," Shires said.

While the outcome of the GMO battle is far from certain, the coming advertising ad blitz is certain to stir things up.

"What people put in their mouths is a very, very salient issue and one packed with a tremendous amount of emotion," said Darry Sragow, a Democratic strategist and managing partner at law firm SNR Denton's Los Angeles office.

17th century shipwreck to be freeze-dried, rebuilt

BRYAN, Texas (AP) ? More than three centuries ago, a French explorer's ship sank in the Gulf of Mexico, taking with it France's hopes of colonizing a vast piece of the New World ? modern-day Texas.

Like La Salle in 1685, researchers at Texas A&M University are in uncharted waters as they try to reconstruct his vessel with a gigantic freeze-dryer, the first undertaking of its size.

By placing the ship ? La Belle ? in a constant environment of up to 60 degrees below zero, more than 300 years of moisture will be safely removed from hundreds of European oak and pine timbers and planks. The freeze-dryer, located at the old Bryan Air Force base several miles northwest of College Station, is 40 feet long and 8 feet wide ? the biggest such machine on the continent devoted to archaeology.

Researchers will then rebuild the 54 ?-foot vessel, which will become the centerpiece of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.

From a historical perspective, it's "an icon of a small event that dramatically changed the course of Texas history," said Jim Bruseth, who led the Texas Historical Commission effort to recover the remains.

The supply ship was built in 1684 and sank two years later in a storm on Matagorda Bay, about midway between Galveston and Corpus Christi.

"When La Belle sank, that doomed La Salle's colony and opened up the door for Spain to come in and occupy Texas," Bruseth said. "People can see firsthand how history can turn on a dime."

"It's an important piece in ship architecture," said Peter Fix, conservator at the school's Center for Maritime Archaeology and Conservation. Researchers have determined that unlike earlier vessels, the frames on La Belle were marked specifically by the French craftsmen so the wood comprising the hull could follow the complex curve of the ship.

"This was the age of Enlightenment when math was coming into more play," Fix said.

After a more than decade-long hunt, Texas Historical Commission archaeologists found it in 1995 in 12 feet of murky water. Then began the tedious recovery that involved constructing a dam around the site.

After the water was pumped out, teams dug through up to 6 feet of mud in the Gulf of Mexico seabed to retrieve the nearly intact ship and some 700,000 items, from swords, cannons and ammunition to beads and mirrors intended for trade. Archaeologists also found one skeleton, believed to be a crew member or settler among the some 40 people aboard.

The ship was then transferred to the Texas A&M lab, where the water-logged wood has been immersed in a chemical solution to keep it solid.

Initially, the ship was being reassembled in a two-stage chemical process, but as oil prices rose, so did the cost of the key chemical, polyethylene glycol. They decided the freeze-dry process was more economical and would shorten the preservation timeframe. So, the hull was disassembled and the wood was categorized and digitally scanned so that they could make molds of its original shape.

A New York-based firm that specializes in scientific equipment built the submarine-like freeze dryer.

"If we were to take any piece of wood, say it's been in the water for 300 years, and pull it out, it would shrink, crack, warp within a couple of days," Fix said. "The physical stress on wood would essentially cause it to fall apart and crumble and powder into pieces."

But scientists know that at the right temperature and pressure, water can go from being solid to gas and skip the liquid phase.

"It's a slow, controlled process and depending on the thickness of material, over four to six or seven months, we know that timber has lost most of its bound water and it's safe to bring out," Fix said, noting that they're experimenting with smaller pieces to "make sure nothing goes wrong."

A similar preservation using freeze-dryer technology is planned for a medieval ship discovered in 2002 in Newport, South Wales. That vessel is about twice the length of La Belle.

The La Belle rebuilding will start late next year at the Bullock Museum.

"I can't wait," said Bruseth, who is serving as guest curator for the exhibit. "It's just fantastic to see this project reach the point where we'll actually be reassembling the ship as a permanent installation."

Rene-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle was the first European to travel the Mississippi River south to the Gulf, claiming all the land along the Mississippi and its tributaries for France in 1682. In 1685, he sailed from France with more than 300 colonists aboard four ships, La Belle among them, to establish a settlement at the mouth of the Mississippi.

Maps of the time show he believed the river was closer to Mexico, and his expedition missed the Mississippi by hundreds of miles.

"They were guessing," Bruseth said.

His team established a colony near Matagorda Bay, but it was ravaged by disease, rattlesnakes and Indians. Three years later, La Salle led a handful of survivors inland in search of the Mississippi. The explorer didn't make it out of Texas; he was murdered by his own men.

(AP) ? Lenovo Group said Thursday its quarterly profit rose 30 percent on strong sales in developing markets but growth slowed amid global economic weakness.

The world's second-largest personal computer maker said it earned $144 million in the three months ending June 30 on $8 billion in global sales. The profit growth rate was down from the previous quarter's 59 percent increase.

PC shipments in the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America rose 59.2 percent while those to Europe, the Middle East and Africa were up 62.3 percent.

"Despite uncertainties in global economic conditions impacting the PC market in the short term, we will remain focused to outperform the worldwide PC market in a profitable way," said chief financial officer Wong Waiming in a conference call with reporters.

"Our strategic investments in mobile internet have started contributing to the growth in sales and improved profitability."

The company passed Dell Inc. last year as the second-biggest PC maker and said Thursday it has narrowed the global market share gap with industry leader Hewlett-Packard Co.

Lenovo said it sold 5 million smartphones in China in the quarter, passing PC sales by number of units for the first time.

The company, with headquarters in Beijing and in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina got into wireless Internet in 2010. It has launched smartphones and Web-linked tablet computers to compete with Apple Inc., South Korea's Samsung Electronics Corp. and Taiwan's HTC Corp.

Lenovo launched its latest ThinkPad notebook last week and said it is designed to appeal to users who want the convenience of a tablet, with a faster startup, lighter weight and longer battery life.

Overview

The only things standing between a dragon?s wrath and the people of the Kingdom is a bard. But not just any bard, the Dragon?s Bard. This individual wanders the lands in search of great stories about great people doing great deeds. He collects them, memorizes them, and then makes the journey to the dragon?s lair. There, he tells the tales he has learned to the great and powerful Khrag, a dragon of legend who is to be feared. If Khrag is pleased by the tales, the Kingdom is saved for a time. If the dragon is not entertained, the lands will burn.

Dragon?s Bard, by Albino Dragon?and based off of?Tracy and Laura Hickman?s ?Dragon?s Bard? book series, is comprised of 1 game board, 1 Dragon miniature, 38 Bard cards (in 5 different colors with number values 1 through 7, including 3 Dragon Rage card types), 5 Bard tokens, 35 Story tokens (in 5 different colors with number values 1, 2, 3, and 5), 40 Mandolin tokens, 40 Rumor tokens, and 1 First Player token. As this is a prototype of the game, we will note comment on the game component quality. HOWEVER, what we received was simply beautiful. The attention to detail, the?outstanding?illustrations, and quality of the prototype pieces left us exceedingly excited to see what the final game will look like!

Example of the proposed final product ? My Head Explode

Tuning the Mandolin

To set up the game, place the game board in the middle of the playing area. Players can sit wherever they like but should be within easy reach of the game board at all times.

Place all the Mandolin tokens and Rumor tokens in their reserved spot on the game board. At this time, also place the Dragon miniature on the board in any of the five regions. The First Player token should also be placed on the board at this time until claimed by a player during the game and the?5 Bard tokens placed to one side of the board.

Now separate the five colors of Story tokens that have an image of one of the five regions on one side and a number value on the other. Make sure the number value is face-down and then randomize the groups. Select 5 Story tokens from each group, making sure you keep the number value face-down so no player can see them, and then stack the tokens into a single column. Place each stack of Story tokens on their matching region?on the game board. The remaining Story tokens are discarded for the duration of the game, but keep the number values hidden.

Example of what the final board might look like for the game

Now shuffle the Bard deck and deal out to each player 8 cards if playing a 4-player game or 10 cards if playing a 3-player game. Players are welcome to pick up their cards and organize them by color and value, but should not reveal their cards to their opponents.

Place the deck to the side of the game board and draw the top card, placing it next to the deck, face-up. This indicates the initial trump color. The Bard token that matches the color of the Bard card drawn is placed on its reserved spot on the game board as a reminder to all the players what the current trump color is. In the event that a Dragon Rage card type is revealed, no Bard token is placed indicating there is no trump for the current round.

You are now ready to play!

A Bard?s Wanderlust

The game will be played in rounds with each rounding having a First Player. The First Player title will change many times during the game, but the individual who holds the title will always complete the following steps:

  1. Place the Dragon?miniature?in one of the five regions with Story tokens (if this is the first round, this step is skipped).
  2. Play one Bard card from their hand (this is referred to as the lead card).

Now it is the other player?s turn. Starting with the next player going clockwise, each player now places a Bard card from their hand, too. The intent is to win the hand (or ?trick?) and win a Story token from the region the Dragon is currently occupying. This is done by playing a Bard card that matches the same color as the lead card with the highest number value or playing a Bard card that matches the current Bard token color. If this is done, the card acts as a trump and will always beat any other card except another trump card with a higher number value.

Bard card example ? note the small icon in the upper left next to the color ? this identifies the card?s perk

Players must play Bard cards that match the color of the lead card if they have them. If they do not, the players must play a trump card. If they have neither, any of the three?remaining?card colors can be played.

The winner of the hand (or ?trick?) collects all the cards played and places them in a stack face-up in front of them. They then collect the top Story token from the region where the Dragon?miniature?is currently located, making sure to not reveal its number value to any of the other players. Optionally, the players can chose to have all claimed Story token values face up. If the player won the trick using a card that matched the lead card, they also collect 1 Mandolin token.

The player who won the trick is, by default, the First Player for the next round. Play continues as described above until the end of the game.

Once all the cards are played, all the cards are collected by the First Player, shuffled, and a new hand is dealt to the players, as well as a new trump color.

A Bard Full of Tricks

While winning tricks is the goal of each round so as to collect Story tokens, the cards played not only determine if the trick is won but also provide special perks. They are as follows:

Bard Card with a Value of ?1?

The first player to play a Bard card with the value of ?1? becomes the First Player for the next round regardless of who wins the current trick. The First Player token is given to this player immediately. Any additional Bard cards with the value of ?1? played do not?provide?any special perk for the duration of the hand.

Bard Card with a Value of ?2?

Whenever any player plays a Bard card with the value of ?2?, they immediately collect 1 Mandolin token.?Any additional Bard cards with the value of ?2? played do not?provide?any special perk for the duration of the hand.

Bard Card with a Value of ?3?

Whenever any player plays a Bard card with the value of ?3?, they can draw and replace the current shown Bard card that has determine?s the hand?s trump color. This new card might change the current trump color for everyone. As such, this is an optional perk.?Any additional Bard cards with the value of ?3? played may also choose to replace the current Bard card that has determined the current trump color.

Bard Card with a Value of ?4?

Whenever any player plays a Bard card with a value of ?4?,??they immediately collects 1 Rumor token.?Any additional Bard cards with the value of ?4? played do not?provide?any special perk for the duration of the hand.

Bard Card with Dragon Rage

A Dragon Rage can be played even if the player has a playable card or trump for the current hand. Once played, no player can win the trick regardless of the card?s already played or played later in the hand. However, all cards played after the Dragon Rage can be any Bard card of any value or color.?Additionally, the player who played the Dragon Rage automatically takes the First Player token, even if another player played a Bard Card with a value of ?1? before or after the Dragon Rage, but any Dragon Rages played after the first can steal the First Player token.

The Song?s End

The game ends when all the Story tokens have been claimed from the regions on the board. The dragon is most pleased and it is now time to determine who the greatest bard in the Kingdom is. The player?s score is determined by adding the following:

  • All claimed Story token number values
  • +1 for every Mandolin token
  • Additionally, the player with the most Rumor tokens?receives?+5 bonus points

The player with the most points wins and has pleased the dragon with the their tales of adventure and romance!

Prediction

My little geeks have played plenty of card games, including the classics like?Hearts and Spades, but these traditional card games never grabbed their interest. They were too abstract (as most traditional card games are) and lacked any theme whatsoever for them to get excited about.?Dragon?s Bard is loaded with theme and is so incredibly colorful and detailed, I had to beat them off with a stick (figuratively speaking). But once again, we see how important theme and presentation can be when games are designed.

But what about the game play? People and things can look absolutely stunning, but lack any substance or depth. After reading the rules of the game, I wasn?t certain. The game description suggests an epic adventure as you travel about the different regions in a fantasy world. But you don?t travel and there is nothing really epic jumping out at me with the rules. Dragon?s Bard is a card game where players play to win a hidden token value. The goal is to win the most so as to have the most points at the end of the game. Pretty simple and not at all epic. Oh, sure, there?s a dragon, but that?s it for fantasy game elements.

The longer I looked at it, the more I felt the theme was pasted on. The ultimate test would be with the Child Geeks and the Gamer geeks. The Child Geeks would most likely be very interested in the game at first, based on the outstanding game components, but they would quickly learn that there was no epic fantasy game to be had, losing interest as a result. The Gamer Geeks would be able to very quickly poke through the fancy, candy wrapping of Dragon?s Bard?to get to the guts of the game. If they found it to be just a card game with variable point awards and simple trick taking game play, they wouldn?t care for it much.

Yes, complicated to predict the game?s outcome and also exciting! I love it when I have a difficult time predicting a game?s level of endorsement with my test groups! Not great for the game, mind you, but when you test enough games, you start seeing the same thing over and over again. Usually, you can judge a game based off the rules and prior experience with other games?similar?to it. When you are given a game that appears common enough but is something of a wild card when it comes to being able to predict it?s final level of endorsement, it?s rather exciting.

And so, I taught the game to my family and friends, not having any real idea of the outcome. After teaching it to my little geeks, demoing a few hands, and answering their few questions (mostly focused on the perks from the Bard cards), I asked them their thoughts on the game so far.

?Wow! Wow! Wow!? ~ Liam (age 8)

?That is the coolest dragon ever, Daddy!? ~ Nyhus (age 5)

Certainly, the dragon and presentation are popular. Let?s play and see if this is a game of substance or nothing more than a collection of really pretty bits. Exciting!

Final Word

My little geeks loved?Dragon?s Bard. Loved. It. They also played the game very well! My 5-year-old, who didn?t play as strongly as his brother, did awesome and won his share of tricks and Story tokens. They both were weak on the use of their Bard card perks to collect extra points and take control of the board, but this improved after a few games. In no time, they were playing very well and not once suggested they were just playing a card game. To them,?Dragon?s Bard was a board game that used cards to win points. An interesting point of view when you consider the core game mechanism of the card play is basic trumps. The final vote from them and all the child geeks we played the game with was exceedingly positive and enthusiastic.

Parent Geeks were the same, and I have never seen non-gamers get so excited about a game with dragons and bards! For those Parent Geeks who loved classic card games, they appreciated the simple game play and loved how you could collect additional points by strategically playing low valued cards at the right time. The subtle way to collect points and taking control of the game was highly enjoyed and everyone agreed the game was as beautiful as it was enjoyable to play.

Gamer Geeks where not as enthralled as the Child and Parent Geeks and were much more reserved with their praise. They appreciated the time and effort put into the game. The quality of the art and presentation were hailed as simply outstanding. What was not liked was the lack of originality when it came to the game play. From the perspective of the Gamer Geek, there was nothing new being presented. That being said, they still enjoyed it. For those Gamer Geeks who liked playing classic card games, they approved Dragon?s Bard?with much pomp. For those Gamer Geeks who did not, they?grudgingly?admitted?they still had fun, would never turn down a game, but would not be the ones to suggest playing it.

My little geeks loved playing the game and the artwork, but mostly, they loved taking points away from their dad

Gamer Geeks, your love of this game is going to be determined by your preferences in game types.?Dragon?s Bard is a casual and light card game that can also be played as shrewdly as a?Poker?game for money. If you are the type of gamer who enjoys battling it out with cards and winning points because of smart card management, then this is a game for you. If not, we think you?ll still enjoy it, but will not be overly in love with it. Again, it comes down to you level of geekiness and your personal taste in games. Based on the positive?reception from our Gamer Geeks, however, we have no problem suggesting this title to the game elitists.

Parent Geeks, here is a beautiful card game that will have your family and friends eager to play before you even have the game set up. The epic presentation of the game might have some non-gamers back peddling from the table thinking this is a game that requires a great deal of gamer knowledge and experience. But this is simply not the case.?Dragon?s Bard uses tried and true game mechanisms that should be familiar to any person who has played traditional and classic card games. Even if you encounter someone who has not, the rules and game play are not complicated or demanding. Perhaps the real strength of the game is its ability to be played by a wide age and ability range. For those who know their way around a card game,??Dragon?s?Bard?can become very cutthroat, but there is also more than enough room for casual game play.

Child Geeks,?Dragon?s Bard is an easy game to learn how to play but not an easy game to win. You?ll need to think about your play and consider your choice in cards wisely. Sometimes the choices will be made for you as you must follow the rules of card play. But even then, you still have a choice. If you can?t win the Story token, take advantage of the lower cards to win Mandolins and Rumor tokens. These will count as points at the end of the game and help you towards victory!

Dragon?s Bard is beautiful to look at and easy to play, but it?s not doing anything new. Despite not winning any points for originality, the game is exceptional and was loved by all who played it. I predict great things for this game as it will?attract?both gamers and non-gamers alike to the same gaming table to share in a common experience. The ease of play makes it accessible to new players with little gaming background and for those who are?familiar?with hand and resource management, the game provides for strategy and tactics common in?Hearts, Spades, and other trump card games. Combine that with a beautiful board and a clean design that provides for fast game play, and you?ve got yourself a winner.

It?s hard not to like a game that is enjoyed by so many and continues to surprise and entertain after countless game plays. I?ve been able to bring together at the gaming table groups I wouldn?t think possible and it?s an absolute joy to see non-gamers compete and even win against the Gamer Geeks. Humbling, surprising, and terribly entertaining.

Do take note of?Dragon?s Bard. It is a game you will be able to play for years and years to come.

?Cyborg? Santos wants her shot at Ronda Rousey

Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey will attempt to defend her belt on Saturday against Sarah Kaufman. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, the former featherweight champ, would like the next shot at Rousey.

"I really wanna fight Ronda," she said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I really want to. She says bad things about me. I never say bad things about my opponent. I want to do my best in the octagon, and if she says she wants to fight me, she can come to my weight or at 140."

Of course, there are a few problems with this potential match-up. For one, Santos is suspended through mid-December. Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, has shown reluctance in setting up fights for suspended fighters in the past because there is too much risk. Promoting a fight on the hopes a fighter can get a license is just begging for trouble.

Secondly, why would Rousey move up? It's Santos making the challenge. If she wants to fight Rousey, she should drop down to 135 -- and therein lies the problem. Santos has never weighed in lower than 135. For her bout with Hitomi Akano, she weighed in 7 lbs. over. Don't expect 135 to happen. Rousey competed in the Olympics at 154 lbs. and has fought at featherweight, but has been so comfortable at bantamweight that she won the belt there.

Do you think Rousey should move up to fight Santos? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Learn to eat healthy like Olympians, get fit w/ Fitness Together Pt Loma

We can all take inspiration from the remarkable athletes that competed in this year?s summer Olympic games (in London from July 27, 2012 to August 12, 2012). These athletes not only train their bodies and their minds to perfection, they also know that their nutrition plays a key role in the recipe for an Olympic champion. Training and competing in the Olympics involves an immense amount of hard work, dedication and perseverance. Eating a healthy diet sufficient in nutrients and with enough calories to fuel competition and training is an important component of all athlete?s training plans and just may be the deciding factor in that tenth of a second that distinguishes gold from silver. Take this opportunity to tap into the Olympic energy swirling around the world this summer and see if you can incorporate some or all of the 6 nutrition tips below and you will eating like an Olympian!

1.? Eat breakfast and wake up a winner.?Mom was right, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Athletes know that they must fuel their workouts with nutritious foods or they will not be able to train and compete to the best of their ability. Ideally it is best to ?break the fast? with a whole grain (oatmeal wins the gold for heart health), mixed with a calcium and protein-rich liquid (such as fat-free milk or soy milk) and topped with vitamin and antioxidant-rich fresh fruit (such as blueberries).

2.? Eat at home more often.?Athletes must ensure that what they put in their mouths is top quality food that has the highest nutrient to calorie ratio. This means that athletes minimize the amount of ?empty? calories they consume by limiting refined sugars, flours, and ?bad? fats.? When we eat out, we are served gargantuan portion sizes packed with too much sodium, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar and refined carbs. Cooking at home more often will allow you to control what goes in your mouth. Start with fresh, unprocessed food and flavor your meals with more healthful alternatives.
3.? Eat small frequent meals for endurance.?Another principle many professional athletes embrace is to eat small, frequent meals. Olympic athletes begin early by fueling-up with a quality breakfast and then continue to fuel throughout the day with healthy meals consisting of low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and ?good? fats. Eating lots of healthful mini-meals keeps energy levels up and powers the body over a 12 hour time span. Although the main nutrient in an athlete?s diet is healthy carbohydrates (such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains such as quinoa, steel cut oats, potatoes, brown rice, and 100% whole wheat pasta and breads), athletes also know to include quality protein sources such as lean beef, poultry, eggs, beans and fish as well as a smaller amount of ?good? fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds and fatty fish.

?

4.? Rehydrate but limit liquid calories.?? Athletes drink plenty of water to keep hydrated through the day, and so should you. Sports drinks have been marketed as the elite athletes ?secret weapon? for peak performance, however in reality this is not the case. Hard core athletes know that sports drinks were designed to be consumed during training or during the event ? not to drink all day long. Water is still the best for rehydration (for most of us) unless we are competing in long distance endurance events.

5.? Eat those carbs.?Athletes look at what they put into their bodies as essential fuel to perform. Carbohydrate is the muscle?s primary form of energy so the athlete?s plate will most often consist of foods that are packed with carbohydrates (as well as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals) to maximize performance.

?

6.? Eat healthy fats and limit fried foods.?Fried foods are not only high in calories, but often contain ?bad? fats. Athletes typically limit their intake of fried foods and instead compliment their meals and snacks with more healthful plant based sources of fats such as nuts, avocados, olive oil, canola oil, and fatty fish.

New oncogene identified for breast cancer

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? A team of researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, led by Dr. Mark W. Jackson, have developed a novel method to identify genes that, when overexpressed, make normal cells behave like cancer cells. Using this method, the Jackson laboratory has identified a new oncogene, which is a gene that contributes to the development of cancer, named FAM83B.

"We made our discovery in a model of breast cancer," said Mark W. Jackson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Using an unbiased screening approach, we let the biology of cancer formation tell us what genes are important and FAM83B was one of the genes that came out of our screen. When FAM83B was overproduced in normal breast cells, it transformed the normal cells, causing them to behave like breast cancer," stated Jackson.

There are relatively few oncogenes that are critical to breast cancer growth, and only one other breast cancer oncogene has been identified in the last 6 years. Breast cancers are classified clinically into subgroups based on the presence of specific proteins, including estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2.

"Analysis of breast cancer revealed that elevated FAM83B expression is associated with the more aggressive, triple negative subgroup which lacks ER, PR and HER2," said Jackson. "In short, patients with triple-negative breast cancer would benefit most from the development of new therapeutics."

Novel oncogenes provide opportunities for drug development that may expand the number of therapies available for eradicating cancer and extending the life of patients. "Our discovery provides the foundation for developing new therapies that can inhibit FAM83B in these aggressive cancers, which have traditionally been difficult to treat." We are currently trying to identify drugs that that can inhibit the function of FAM83B." stated Jackson.

This study will appear in The Journal of Clinical Investigation and will be co-published with a discovery from the laboratory of Dr. Mina Bissell at Lawrence Berkley National Laboratories. Dr. Bissell's laboratory discovered an oncogene called FAM83A. Both FAM83A and FAM83B belong to an eight member family of genes that both laboratories propose may drive tumor formation and therapeutic resistance.

The gaming retail chain, GameStop, seems to have taken a hit over the past year as many users move game downloads to mobile devices and online platforms. Although the retailer continues to maintain a two-thirds share of the retail market, the company?s stock seems to have taken a 26% dive, leaving the company in need of a serious turn-around. It should be noted that last September, GameStop began to take in trade-ins of Apple devices and it has been discovered that Apple products have been part of the company?s master plan to make a comeback. HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) ? Cheered by the biggest crowds of his campaign, Republican Mitt Romney declared Sunday that 42-year-old running mate Paul Ryan is ready to be president, but said his own budget plan, not the more detailed proposals of his partner, will be the basis of his White House bid.

"I have my budget plan," he said. "And that's the budget plan we're going to run on."

Earlier, Romney walked a careful line as he campaigned with Ryan by his side in North Carolina, singling out his running mate's work "to make sure we can save Medicare." But the presidential candidate never said whether he embraced Ryan's austere plan himself, and he addressed the matter more directly in a "60 Minutes" interview, with Ryan still with him, that aired Sunday night on CBS.

Democrats weren't about to let them off that hook.

President Barack Obama, attending campaign fundraisers Sunday in Chicago, tagged Ryan as the "ideological leader" of the Republican Party.

"He is a decent man, he is a family man, he is an articulate spokesman for Gov. Romney's vision but it is a vision that I fundamentally disagree with," Obama said in his first public comments about Ryan's selection.

Senior Obama adviser David Axelrod and other aides spent Sunday trying to brand Ryan's budget "the Ryan-Romney plan."

During the Republican primary, Romney had called Ryan's budget a "bold and exciting effort" that was "very much needed."

Ryan proposed to reshape the long-standing entitlement by setting up a voucher-like system to let future retirees shop for private health coverage or choose the traditional program ? a plan that independent budget analysts say would probably mean smaller increases in benefits than current law would provide.

Romney and Ryan, in their first joint television interview Sunday, were clearly mindful that some of Ryan's proposals don't sit well with key constituencies, among them seniors in critical states like Florida and Ohio. Each man sought to reassure older voters they wouldn't take away their benefits, with Ryan saying his mother is "a Medicare senior in Florida" and Romney vowing there would be "no changes" for seniors currently counting on the popular federal program.

"In America, the nature of this country has been giving people more freedom, more choices," Romney said. "That's how we make Medicare work down the road."

Romney praised his running mate for his policy depth and analytical skills and said if they should win the election, Ryan will surely be consulted in big decisions ? "along with other individuals." He added: "Obviously I have to make the final call in important decisions."

The presumptive presidential nominee said Ryan, "if it were necessary, could become president." And Romney extolled his running mate's Washington experience, despite having criticized primary rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum for their years in the nation's capital.

Ryan said he planned to release two years of personal tax returns to the public. The wealthy Romney is also releasing two years of returns, despite pressure from Democrats and some Republicans to provide more information about how he manages his millions.

Romney's selection of Ryan has jolted the presidential contest, until now one that had done little to draw the public's attention, and set the contours for the fall campaign: Romney as a proponent of a friendlier business climate seeking to revitalize the economy and rein in federal spending and Obama casting himself as a defender of middle-class families and federal spending on health care, retirement pensions and education.

The running mate pick also shifted the campaign debate, at least temporarily, to the pressing economic challenges facing the country ? a debate both Romney and Obama have said they wanted to have even as the dialogue had spiraled into nasty, personal attacks. Sunday was a marked departure from the previous week, when the race for the White House devolved into name-calling and accusations of lying from both campaigns.

Three months from Election Day, polls find Obama with a narrow lead over Romney, though the race remains tight in key battleground states. And while Ryan's selection raised the role of government spending and Medicare in the election, the fundamentals of the campaign remained unchanged: a race defined by a weak economy and high unemployment, measured most recently at 8.3 percent in July.

Romney, seeking to pull his campaign out of a summer slump, appeared to relish in campaigning alongside the youthful and energetic Ryan.

"This is Day Two for me," a gleeful Romney told a campaign rally in Moorseville, N.C. "This is Day Two on our comeback tour to get America strong again, to rebuild the promise of America." He meant a comeback for the country, but that could apply as well to his campaign.

The duo blitzed through North Carolina ? a competitive battleground state in the November election ? as part of a multistate bus tour. The pair ended the day in Waukesha, Wis., with a homecoming-themed event for Ryan, who was in tears as he took the stage.

Romney, emboldened by the enthusiastic crowds that greeted the pair Sunday, wrapped up a day of campaigning with a sharp shot at the tone of Obama's campaign. "Mr. President, take your campaign out of the gutter," he said.

Romney then planned to head to Florida and Ohio as the week begins, while Ryan was scheduled to travel to Iowa on Monday as the ticket looked to cover as much ground as possible.

For Ryan, the weekend of campaigning was a chance to make a first impression on many voters. A recent CNN/ORC international poll found a majority of voters had no opinion of the congressman, an up and comer in Washington but far from a household name. Nearly 40 percent had never heard of him and 16 percent weren't sure what they thought of him.

The 42-year-old congressman embraced the attack dog role traditionally assumed by the No. 2 on the ticket. He said Obama had turned his 2008 campaign slogan of "hope and change" into "attack and blame."

"We're not going to fall for it," Ryan told a crowd of 5,000 in High Point, N.C.

Obama's campaign had already been trying to tie Romney to Ryan's tough budget blueprint even before the Wisconsin congressman emerged as a contender for the GOP ticket. Democrats believe seniors, those nearing retirement and middle-income voters will view Ryan's long-term budget plan remaking Medicare and cutting trillions in federal spending as a threat to their financial security.

Campaign officials were readying state-specific strategies aimed at seniors in Florida and Ohio, and also planned to court young people and military service members who they believe will be turned off by other elements of Ryan's proposed budget cuts.

As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan is the primary author of conservative tax and spending proposals that the tea party-infused Republican majority approved over vigorous Democratic opposition in 2011 and again in 2012.

They envision transforming Medicare into a program in which future seniors would receive government checks that they could use to purchase health insurance. Under the current program, the government directly pays doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.

Ryan and other supporters say the change is needed to prevent the program from financial calamity. Critics argue it would impose ever-increasing costs on seniors.

Other elements of the budget plan would cut projected spending for Medicaid, which provides health care for the poor, as well as food stamps, student loans and other social programs that Obama and Democrats have pledged to defend.

In all, it projects spending cuts of $5.3 trillion over a decade and would cut future projected deficits substantially. Romney, too, has proposed ambitious cuts in federal spending, but without the specifics that make Ryan's plan so attractive to fiscal conservatives and such a target for Democrats.

Republicans say Ryan could help put Wisconsin, which traditionally has voted Democratic in presidential campaigns, in play and that the Catholic Midwesterner also could appeal to blue-collar voters whom Romney, a Mormon and multimillionaire, has struggled to reach in Iowa and elsewhere.

Obama's campaign had no plans to start running new television ads in Wisconsin following Ryan's pick. Officials said they didn't think Ryan was popular enough statewide to swing Wisconsin toward the Republican ticket.

Obama's campaign argues Ryan's budget could be a powerful campaign tool for the president in states like Pennsylvania and Iowa, in addition to Florida and Ohio.

Down ballot, party leaders hoped to work in tandem with Obama to turn the Ryan budget into a litmus test in congressional races, forcing Republican opponents to take ownership of the plan. The campaign arm of the House Democrats, for example, was urging its lawmakers to call Ryan's budget plan ? not the man himself ? Romney's new "running mate."
