"Real Housewives" star Adrienne Maloof and husband split

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Adrienne Maloof might not be a housewife much longer.

Maloof's husband, plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif, filed for separation from the reality TV personality on Monday, according to court papers obtained by TheWrap.

The papers, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for the separation.

Nassif and businesswoman Maloof have been married since May 2002. They have three sons: Gavin, 9, and six-year-old twins Christian and Collin.

The papers make note of a prenuptial agreement. (Maloof is one of the owners of Maloof Companies, whose holdings include the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas and the Sacramento Kings basketball team.)

Separate and community property held by the couple will be determined in an amended petition. According to the filing, Nassif is asking that the court not be allowed to award spousal support to Maloof.

A representative for Maloof has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

Season 3 of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" will premiere in September.

Tumor cells' inner workings predict cancer progression

Home Reports Life Sciences Content
30.07.2012

Using a new assay method to study tumor cells, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center have found evidence of clonal evolution in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

The assay method distinguishes features of leukemia cells that indicate whether the disease will be aggressive or slow-moving, a key factor in when and how patients are treated.

The findings are published in the July 26, 2012 First Edition online issue of Blood.

The progression of CLL is highly variable, dependent upon the rate and effects of accumulating monoclonal B cells in the blood, marrow, and lymphoid tissues. Some patients are symptom-free for years and do not require treatment, which involves the use of drugs that can cause significant side effects and are not curative. In other patients, however, CLL is relatively aggressive and demands therapeutic intervention soon after diagnosis.

"Our study shows that there may not be a sharp dividing line between the more aggressive and less aggressive forms of CLL," said Thomas J. Kipps, MD, PhD, Evelyn and Edwin Tasch Chair in Cancer Research and senior author of the study. "Instead, it seems that over time the leukemia cells of patients with indolent disease begin to use genes similar to those that are generally used by CLL cells of patients with aggressive disease. In other words, prior to requiring therapy, the patterns of genes expressed by CLL cells appear to converge, regardless of whether or not the patient had aggressive versus indolent disease at diagnosis."

Existing markers for aggressive or indolent disease are mostly fixed and have declining predictive value the longer the patient is from his or her initial diagnosis. When the blood sample is collected, these markers cannot reliably predict whether a CLL patient will need therapy soon, particularly when the patient has had the diagnosis of CLL for many years.

Kipps and colleagues studied thousands of genes, particularly those that code for proteins, in a group of 130 CLL patients with varying risks of disease progression. They identified 38 prognostic subnetworks of interacting genes and proteins that, at the time of sample collection, indicate the relative the aggressiveness of the disease and predict when the patient will require therapy. They confirmed their work using the method on two other, smaller CLL patient cohorts in Germany and Italy.

The subnetworks offer greater predictive value because they are based not on expression levels of individual genes or proteins, but on how they dynamically interact and change over time, influencing the course of the CLL and patient symptoms.

"In a sense, we looked at families rather than individuals," said Kipps. "If you find in an interconnected family where most genes or proteins are expressed at higher levels, it becomes more likely that these genes and proteins have functional significance."

He added that while the subnetworks abound in data, their complexity actually makes them easy to interpret and understand. "It's like when you look out of a window and see the sky, clouds, trees, people, cars. You're getting tremendous amounts of information that individually doesn't tell you much. But when you look at the scene as a whole, you see patterns and networks. This work is similar. We're taking all of the individual gene expression patterns and making sense of them as a whole. We're more able to more clearly see how they control and regulate function."

The findings help define how CLL ? and perhaps other cancers ? evolve over time, becoming more aggressive and deadly. "It's as if each tumor has a clock which determines how frequently it may acquire the chance changes that make it behave more aggressively. Although the rates can vary, it appears that tumors march down similar pathways, which converge over time to a point where they become aggressive enough to require therapy."

The study may alter how scientists think about CLL and how clinicians treat the disease: whether it is better to wait for later stages of the disease when tumor cells are more fragile and easier to kill, or treat early-stage indolent tumor cells aggressively, when they are fewer in number but harder to find and more resistant to therapy.

About Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

CLL is the most common form of leukemia, and most commonly diagnosed in adults after the age of 50. Incidence rates increase with age. The majority of CLL patients are men. Roughly 16,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year; 4,400 die from the disease annually. CLL is currently considered incurable, but typically progresses slowly with no ill effect. Treatment is often postponed until serious symptoms appear that affect quality of life.

Hong Kong protests Chinese curriculum

Tens of thousands of Hong Kong residents marched yesterday to protest plans to implement Chinese national education lessons into the city's curriculum.

More than 90,000 parents, students and social activists took to the streets Sunday to stand against introducing a "Moral and National Education" subject, according to organizers, while police estimated the turnout at 32,000, reported CNN. While curriculum content has not yet been determined, guidelines were distributed to schools in a booklet called "The China Model," written by the government's National Education Services Centre.

More from GlobalPost:?China arrests more than 10,000 for internet 'crimes'

The booklet includes provocative statements, claiming that China's ruling party is "progressive, selfless and united," CNN said. It also said multi-party systems bring disaster to countries like the United States and made no mention of major Chinese historical events, such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

Protesters wore black and white to symbolize the contract between right and wrong, and carried signs stating, "We don't need no thought control," according to Bloomberg. The government said it planned to introduce the subject in state-run primary schools in Hong Kong starting in September. Classes will be extended to secondary schools from 2013 and the lessons will be phased in over three years, with an aim to foster Chinese identity.

Most parents said they did not take issue with national education or their children learning about Chinese language, culture and politics,?reported The New York Times. Their problem was with this specific curriculum, which appears to be heavy on pro-Communist Party propaganda.

"National education is necessary. Every country has it, but not like this," said Elaine Yau, who was at the protest with her 7-year-old daughter.

Why The Open Cloud Wins And Oracle Loses When IT Gets Virtualized

oraclelogoOracle said today they have bought a company called Xsigo that leverages the growing popularity of a new form of technology that virtualizes the network. It's called software defined networking (SDN) and it is shaking up the way we view IT and the cloud. The acquisition points to a shift in the market that will eventually make Oracle the loser. The cloud is opening up while Oracle is folding inward. Network virtualization is serving as a catalyst for a federated infrastructure that will make the open cloud more viable for an organization than a vertically integrated stack that needs to be managed by teams of IT engineers. ?Oracle is rejecting that premise and will use Xsigo to strengthen its own proprietary environment.

Bert Vogelstein on Cancer Drugs and Cancer Screening. In the ...

Here's an interesting profile of Bert Vogelstein, who has had a major impact on oncology over the years, especially in the area of cancer-associated genetic mutations. Some of his recent work bears on the question of how useful some of the newer drugs are:

Vogelstein seems to enjoy pricking balloons. Recently, he has focused on a new target: exuberance over targeted cancer drugs. He says he got interested after seeing a paper last year on melanoma therapy. It included photos of the torso of a man with melanoma who had received a new drug aimed at a mutated gene called BRAF. Before treatment, the patient's skin was riddled with metastatic tumors; soon after treatment, the tumors vanished, and the man looked perfectly healthy. Five months later, the tumors reappeared in exactly the same locations. The photos ?blew my mind,? Vogelstein says. ?Why do the tumors all return at roughly the same time? It's almost as miraculous as when they disappear.?

Targeted drugs for other cancers usually stop working after about the same number of months, presumably because rare resistant cells in the tumors continue to grow and ultimately proliferate. To investigate, Luis Diaz and others in the Vogelstein-Kinzler lab drew on a sensitive technique they had developed for detecting mutations in the very small amount of tumor DNA present in a cancer patient's blood. They collected a series of these ?liquid biopsy? measurements from patients with advanced colorectal cancer whose tumors had become resistant to a targeted cancer drug. With Harvard University computational biologist Martin Nowak, they devised a model showing that even before the patient begins treatment, some tumor cells always carry genes with random mutations that can support resistance to targeted drugs. This form of resistance, they wrote last month in Nature, is therefore ?a fait accompli.?

But the modeling study also suggested that this resistance can be delayed by combining two drugs that target different pathways. Indeed, Vogelstein and colleagues suggest that once a targeted drug has passed initial safety trials, it's so clear that single-drug therapy will fail that they consider it unethical to give patients just one such drug. ?Why shouldn't you design a large, very expensive trial to incorporate more than one agent?? Vogelstein asks.

There are a lot of labs working on this "liquid biopsy" idea, and it's the sort of thing that you could only imagine doing with modern DNA sequencing technology (and modern DNA sequencing costs). A big worry, as with any screening technology, is the false positive rate. As you make finer and finer distinctions among different tumor types, the incidence of any given one in the population gets lower and lower, and thus your test has to be more and more reliable in order to avoid overdiagnosing hordes of panicked patients.

Interestingly, when I talk to people outside of the medical research field, they seem less worried about overdiagnosis than underdiagnosis (false positives versus false negatives). Psychologically, I can see how that happens - they don't want to the test to miss anyone. But being told that you do have cancer, when you really don't, is not a good outcome, considering what the therapy will put you through. And this is what makes things like the PSA test recommendation (and mammograms in younger patients) so controversial. In the push to make sure that you find every patient, you can end up harming more people than you help. "But if you just save one life. . ." goes the phrase, at least goes the phrase from people who don't realize that they might be ending the sentence with ". . .it's worth killing off a few more".

I hope that the blood test idea works out; it would be a great advance. But a less-than-optimal one could be worse than having none at all. Look for plenty of arguments about this in the coming years - I'll fill in some of the talking points in advance: "The FDA is holding back medical progress by not approving this new test". "The FDA has given in to commercial pressures by approving this faulty new test". "This test will end up hurting more people than it helps". "How can you be against cancer screening? Isn't it always worth looking?". "This is all just a disguised cost-cutting effort; they're approving this test because it's cheaper than doing better screening". "This is all just a disguised cost-cutting effort; they're not approving this test because they're afraid that too many people will be diagnosed with cancer". And so on.

Exploding termites: Aging termites become suicide bombers, finds study (+video)

As it ages, a species of tropical termite develops a 'backpack' filled with toxic chemicals that explodes when the insect is threatened. ?

When grabbed by another termite, a predator or a person with tweezers, these backpack-sporting termites, which the researchers call blue workers, rupture and spew a toxic, sticky substance, scientists have found.

The unfortunate workers?from this species of tropical termite,?Neocapritermes taracua,?have two bluish spots visible on the backs of their abdomens. These spots contain crystals made of a copper-containing protein stored in two external "backpack" pouches, write the researchers.

The crystals react with the salivary gland secretions stored in their abdomens to create a droplet of toxic goo that can kill or paralyze worker termites from another species,?Labiotermes labralis, an experiment revealed. [Video of Exploding Suicide Termites]

So-called white workers also have the salivary secretions but lack the blue crystals. These workers are less aggressive, slower to burst in battle and the substance they produce is not as effective?against their enemies.

The researchers transplanted the crystals from blue workers onto white workers, and found the white workers became more deadly once they had the crystals.??

They also determined that the blue workers were older by measuring the length of the edge of the termites' mandibles. Termites chew on wood and as they age their mandibles wear down. The larger the blue crystals on a termite, the more blunt its mandibles, the researchers found.

Among?social insects?like termites, the practice of sending older workers into battle is common, researcher Yves Roisin of Universit? Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium said in a podcast interview released by the journal Science, where this research is detailed.

"[Among] such insects of course the individual doesn't really count or it counts by the work it can actually do for the colony, and when they are old and probably less efficient they are more likely to sacrifice themselves," Roisin said.

However, the blue workers' suicide gear is highly unusual in the world of?insect warfare, because the combination of blue crystals and salivary secretions make it a two-component system, Roisin said, adding that it is also exceptional that one component (the crystals) is carried outside of the body.

So far, the researchers have seen this behavior in this species only, but they hope to see if its relatives do something similar, he said.

The research appears in Friday's (July 27) issue of the journal Science.

Free of charge Web site Promotion By Creating Posts. | ONLINE ...

As any one with a web site understands, web page promotion and research engine visibility are essential. The way in which you go about reaching lookup motor visibility is as much as you, but there?s a way of getting fast outcomes that most people overlook. Many people will focus their attempts on search engine optimization and when the website is ready for small business, some compensated advertising. Paid out advertising has one significant failing, soon after a specific period of time, or clicks and so on you need to pay once more or else your advert is removed and the site visitors it was producing stops.. In my opinion there is an improved way than compensated marketing. It really is ?reprint articles?. What is that? Really simply it signifies that you compose an report about almost anything you understand, consisting of around 600 to 1200 phrases, and then you ?release? it for other folks to make use of. That may perhaps appear like a great deal of words to write, but once you get started out it is actually normally tougher to help keep the phrase rely down, than to attain probably the most successful rely of 1200 phrases or much less.

That you are in all probability asking your self how writing an article can enhance site visitors to your website. The report needs to carry the visitors interest so they?re thinking about clicking your website link when they have finished reading through it. The link again to your website at the bottom of the report does the majority of the work. ( Ding! ) Whenever your article is made use of by web site owners your link recognition can enhance pretty quickly. The more hyperlinks you will discover pointing for your web site, the higher your web page will rank in the search engines, and that can definitely support to usher in targeted traffic. Search engines like google use your ?link popularity? as a crucial aspect when operating out how large your website will rank. By way of example, you might have 50 properly penned and research engine optimized pages producing up your web site, but if no one links to it, how will be the search engines to know in case your site is any great? They use website link reputation as being a gauge of human fascination in the contents of the internet site. The much more backlinks you have pointing for your web page the higher the human fascination supposedly is, and as this kind of the search engines like google reward that with higher ranking, which consequently gets you a lot more site visitors.

So how do you receive additional links from an article which you have composed? The top way is to spend somebody to distribute it for you personally. Hang on, that seems quite a bit like marketing! And it can be extremely similar. But it is advertising that doesn?t expire, and it may basically get extra helpful with time. Once once again, the reason for that?s fairly simple, and it goes one thing like this. Any time you market an write-up using a compensated services, you can typically get your post accessible to hundreds or even thousands of ?ezines? or net websites that use reprint content articles. Which can give your website many new inbound links which may raise your internet sites link popularity very swiftly. I must level out which you essentially are releasing your report ?into the wild? with the internet, in the hope that a tiny proportion of persons that go through it, will copy it in full and publish it on their website. From there it can only be noticed by more people today, with much more chances for it to become copied or clicked on. Each and every time your post will get ?picked up? by an additional web site, you get a further inbound link. Cool. Try carrying out that by having an advert! It just won?t take place! Articles do not commonly have an use by date, and also if they?re archived, they nonetheless purpose as being a link for your web site. That?s since the archived articles are still spidered by search engines like google so you?re nonetheless obtaining hyperlink reputation for them. Needless to say this strategy functions even superior when you regularly launch an article within this way, for making a following of the content articles is a confident way to get even more visitors for your web page. Do not forget that your articles may be about anything, it can be the website link in the bottom that assists your web page to prosper. The a lot more instructive, humorous, or relevant your write-up is, the greater its probabilities are of getting made use of. Don?t consist of profanity, racist remarks as well as the like, since they will not do your net web-sites reputation any fantastic in any respect. Some article publishers will refuse to utilize your content articles if there?s a solitary swear phrase in it. Also bear in thoughts that you are writing an report, NOT an advert, so it should not go through like an advert! So write towards the best of the potential and also if your subject isn?t new, it should really help to boost your traffic rather properly. Give your report sufficient time to function, to the wheels in the web flip pretty slowly at occasions. It is possible to get software program that checks your website link reputation together with the search engines like google, but do not trouble with examining as well frequently, when for every fortnight will probably be normally adequate.

Be sure to don?t overlook to proof study your articles, or superior still, get someone else to complete it for you. The author of an report is normally not the ideal individual to proof study it. That is because they understand what it is intended to state and as such they?re able to have problems in selecting up any errors. Good luck!

Obama, Romney neck and neck in vice-is-nice Nevada

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? They're called "the cooler crowd," and Las Vegas is greeting them with ambivalence: A stream of post-recession tourists ready for fun but watching their wallets.

They gamble less extravagantly than the typical visitor of the past, skimp on tips, sometimes lug coolers and microwaves into their hotel rooms to save on drinks and meals. They're a mixed blessing in a state hit as hard as any by the economic downturn and still struggling to recover.

They're not the only visitors, of course.

President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney have been here, competing strenuously for Nevada's six electoral votes in what is one of the most contested states. The candidates, too, have gotten a mixed reception. Some kingpins of the gambling industry are writing big campaign checks, but many Nevadans have other matters on their mind, namely foreclosures, layoffs, wage cuts, medical bills.

At the MGM Grand, one of the 30-plus lavish gambling resorts along the Las Vegas Strip, bell captain Craig Houston gets a good look at both the high rollers and the "cooler crowd" streaming into the grandiose lobby. Though many visitors are stingier than in the past, the flow of visitors has rebounded to pre-recession levels, and industry analysts say 2012 could end with a record.

By some measures, Houston is fortunate. In the state with the highest jobless rate, at 11.6 percent, he's back at work after being laid off from another resort in 2008, going through bankruptcy and losing his home. He's now a renter, and he tells his grown sons to stay out of the casino business. "You get upset that you're not making the money you used to," he says.

Houston, 50, says he's weary of political bickering and wishes for more focused efforts to boost the middle class. He's not overwhelmed by Obama's performance, but expects to vote for him anyway.

"Most people in this community have been in survival mode," said D. Taylor, secretary-treasurer of a hotel workers union. "Of the things that are important to them, politics are about 18th on the checklist."

___

For many in the state, their wish list for the election is short.

"Mostly people will be looking at national economy ? looking for a broad recovery which gives people elsewhere more discretionary income to come here," said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Obama won the state in 2008, thanks in part to strong backing from union members and other working-class voters alarmed by the economic collapse. Four years later, Nevada is still beleaguered. It has lost 12 percent of its jobs during that span, the highest rate in the nation, and its foreclosure rate also remains one of the worst.

Given the pain inflicted by Nevada's housing crisis, it's not surprising that Obama's campaign ran an ad attempting to use Romney's own words against him.

"Don't try and stop the foreclosure process," Romney said during a visit to Las Vegas last year. "Let it run its course and hit the bottom."

Nelson Araujo of the Financial Guidance Center, which counsels hard-up Latino families in Las Vegas, said many of his clients were grateful to the Obama administration for federal initiatives, such as the U.S. Treasury's Hardest Hit Fund, that enabled some low-income homeowners to avoid foreclosures.

"Because we're such a hard-hit state, people want to know who's going to bring that aid," said Araujo, expressing skepticism that only private-sector efforts would suffice.

In greater Las Vegas, the state's economic engine and home to 72 percent of its people, the picture is mixed. At the high end, sales of luxury condominium units at the Trump International Hotel are surging, with many of the buyers from Asia.

The real estate and home-building sectors are improving, but slowly. Thousands of construction workers remain jobless.

Kolleen Kelley, president of the Las Vegas-area Realtors association, said her colleagues are bracing for slow progress, regardless of the election outcome.

"I don't know that they're blaming any one person or one party," she said. "This is not a simple fix. It's going to take a longer period of time to get us out from under."

Despite some recent diversification, Nevada's economy is more concentrated than virtually any other state. The tourism/gambling sector accounts for more than one-quarter of Nevada's 1.14 million nonfarm jobs, and 13 of the 20 largest employers are casino/hotel companies.

Thanks to intensive organizing in that industry, Nevada stands out as a rare stronghold for private sector unions. The hotel and casino operators, unlike counterparts in some other sectors, can't threaten to outsource or relocate, giving the unions some extra leverage.

Taylor's union, Culinary Workers Local 226, claims 60,000 members in Las Vegas. They're waitresses, housekeepers, doormen and others at nearly all the main hotels on the Strip and most of the less-glamorous establishments in downtown. At the union hall, in a low-rise industrial area north of the Strip, members said their contracts helped them endure the worst of the recession, although there was no immunity to hard times.

Tammy Wells, 47, a cocktail waitress at the Luxor, said her tip allocation was cut by half at one point, dropping her annual earnings from about $40,000 to below $20,000. Her pay is now on the upswing, but not yet back to its peak, she said.

Local 226 gave Obama one of his first big labor endorsements during the Democratic primary campaign in 2008, and Wells said she is sticking with the president this year.

"It's very important that it's someone in touch with the common person, who knows what it's like to worry about making your house payment, about having health insurance for your child," Wells said. "Romney is not the common man."

Taylor said relatively few of his members are likely to back Romney, but wondered if some might lack the enthusiasm to turn out for Obama.

"Working people, since the 2008 election, don't see the Democrats as really delivering for them," he said. "The Republicans work hard to deliver for their constituency. I wish the Democrats could do the same for theirs."

Ryan Erwin, a Nevada political consultant who's advising the Romney campaign, believes economic conditions favor his candidate.

"People moved to Nevada to chase a dream, so there is an entrepreneurial spirit here," he said. "They see an Obama administration that has promised one thing, delivered something different ? not a single policy that's beneficial to Nevada's job creation environment."

Reno restaurant owner Tim Wulf is the kind of entrepreneur that Romney aides have in mind.

As of the 2008 election, Wulf says he operated three Jimmy John's sandwich shops with 94 employees and was planning to expand. He said administration policies, notably Obama's health care overhaul, undermined his confidence, prompting him to sell one of the stores and cut his workforce to about 50 in hopes he wouldn't be forced to provide them with health care.

"We become a defensive business instead of growing and expanding," he said.

A small business owner in the Obama camp is Ron Nelsen, 52, who runs Las Vegas-based Pioneer Overhead Door. He says the recent downturn was the worst he'd experienced in a 34-year career, forcing him to cut his 10-person workforce in half, but he now detects signs of an upswing and is ready to add at least one more worker.

He believes Obama is more committed than Romney to strengthening the middle class.

"Making the rich pay a little more doesn't scare me," Nelsen said. "I'd love to be rich so I could pay a little more."

Then there's Jon Basso, owner and impresario at the Heart Attack Grill on a pedestrian mall in downtown Las Vegas.

"Taste Worth Dying For" is the restaurant's motto. A vintage ambulance is parked by the entrance, the waitresses are clad as nurses, and customers don hospital gowns before consuming the high-calorie burgers, fries and butterfat shakes.

Basso, tending bar in a doctor's coat, said his business weathered the recession well "because of how outlandish we are." He mimed a coin flip when asked about his presidential preference; his favored candidate had been Ron Paul, the Texas congressman outpaced by Romney.

"Our whole gimmick is one massive libertarian protest," Basso said of his restaurant. "I want the Democrats to stay out of my wallet and the Republicans to stay out of my bedroom."

___

In some ways, neither Obama nor Romney seems like an obvious champion for a reeling state economy that relies heavily on indulgent, vice-spiced tourism.

Romney is a devout Mormon. His Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opposes gambling and says governments should not sponsor it. Obama, also a sober-minded family man, irked local civic leaders early in his term by using Las Vegas visits as a metaphor for profligacy.

Nonetheless, each candidate has staunch support at the top levels of the casino industry, which has thrived over the decades by winning friends on both sides of the aisle at the statehouse in Carson City and in Congress.

"In Nevada, we say there's only one political party. It's the gaming party," said David Damore, a political science professor at UNLV.

Some of the best-known figures ? casino moguls Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn, for example ? have berated Obama's policies. Adelson, CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., is giving tens of millions of dollars to Republican causes this election season, including a group supporting Romney.

However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the patriarch of Nevada Democrats, is well-regarded within the industry, and many of its leaders donate to politicians of both major parties.

"At our company, we lean down the middle. We need friends on both sides," said Jan Jones, a former Las Vegas mayor who's now an executive with Caesars Entertainment. She personally supports Obama ? more for his positions on women's issues and health care than for business-related factors.

Early in his term, Obama created a stir by citing Las Vegas in unflattering contexts. He chastised bank employees for lavish Vegas vacations right after they got federal bailouts and later told a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, "You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college."

The remarks prompted some business groups to cancel planned Las Vegas trips and infuriated then-Mayor Oscar Goodman, who said Obama "has a real psychological hang-up about the entertainment capital of the world."

On a more recent visit, Obama said, "Let me set the record straight: I love Vegas."

For the most part, said Alan Feldman, a vice president at MGM Resorts International, presidents have little direct impact on the gambling/tourism industry, though he praised the Obama administration for easing visa requirements in ways that help Nevada attract more visitors from countries such as China and Brazil.

It might seem that Romney, from a faith opposed to gambling, would be viewed warily by the industry's movers and shakers, but that's not the case. Influential members of Nevada's large Mormon community have found ways to profit from the casinos over the decades. One of the first influential bankers to make loans to the casinos in the 1960s, Parry Thomas, came from a Mormon family.

Now a pro-Romney political action group is accepting huge sums from Adelson, whose casino investments in Macau and Singapore have made him one of the world's richest men. Some Las Vegans assume a Romney administration would find ways to show gratitude.

"Romney may not particularly like gambling, but he's not going to go out of his way to hurt it," said Jan Jones.

Neither candidate is a likely supporter of another Nevada industry: prostitution. It's illegal in Las Vegas, but is allowed in most Nevada counties.

Dennis Hof, owner of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch brothel near Carson City, says business has boomed even during the recession, thanks in part to publicity from an HBO series about the enterprise.

Keen on politics, Hof has surveyed his customers. He says 60 percent are Democrat, 40 percent Republican, "but the Republicans spend more."

This year, he's leaning toward Romney for his business background.

"I like the fact that this guy has looked at budgets, made hard cuts," Hof said. "Obama doesn't have a clue about business ? he wouldn't know how to run the Bunny Ranch. Romney would."

Bod for tea: Guest post: Preparing for a New Baby in the House

There are few life events more exciting and terrifying all wrapped into one than bringing home a new bundle of baby. That is to say, except maybe bringing home a newborn baby to a household that is already run by a headstrong and tumbling toddler. Bringing home a newborn when you already have a toddler at home elicits anxiety for many different reasons. Not only are you bringing home a baby, you'll have two wild and crazy kids to deal with now and you can never know exactly how a toddler will react to being an older sibling. But, of course, by preparing a little and educating yourself and your family on this big life step, you can relieve some of that stress. Ease that transition into a two child household by following these tips and tricks for preparing your toddler for a newborn sibling.

Introduce and Educate
Before the baby is even close to arriving you should introduce that subject to your little one. You don't want the new baby to be a big and noisy surprise. Talk with your toddler about the baby. Let him or her touch your pregnant belly and explain that the baby is inside. Even if you don't think your toddler understands, starting the conversation early is important. Do your best to educate your child (and yourself) on the concept of having a sibling. Check out any children's books on the topic. This can be a fun and nice way to introduce the subject. Rather than only focusing on the concept of a "new baby!", talk about things in terms of your toddler becoming a big sister or brother. This helps your toddler understand their place in the event and wards off feelings of jealousy.

Give Lots of Attention
It's important to give your toddler a lot of attention during the time you are preparing them for a newborn. While it may seem logical to try to get your youngster used to having less of your attention because soon you'll be on newborn baby duty, this isn't always the best policy. Yes, your toddler is going to have to get used to having less of your undivided attention, but don't start that right away. In the start, your toddler needs lots of love, lots of attention, and lots of understanding. One of the biggest issues parents run into when siblings enter the picture is their young toddler becoming jealous of all the attention the baby gets. Share aspects of the pregnancy and process with your toddler so that they can feel like they and the baby share the world's attention.

Encourage Independence
Independence is key. Your little one can actually be a wonderful helper around the house when you will be tending to baby duties. Involve your toddler in everything you do (where it is both safe and possible). Let your toddler help you do chores and teach them to care for some of their own needs on their own. This can be a really fun time for a toddler preparing to become a big brother or sister. Thinking about potty training and other independent activities is important to do early on. Obviously, sometimes timing isn't going to work out perfectly. But, if you have a newborn on the way, think about working with your toddler on potty training, sleeping in their own bed, and other little independence steps.

Understand It Takes Time
First and foremost, enjoy the exciting ride. This is a scary, exhausting, and wonderful time - don't miss out on the adventure. Try to be understanding of your toddler's feelings when the baby comes and try to realise that little speed bumps are bound to happen - things will eventually stabilise. Accept that you've done the best you can to prepare yourself and your family for this new adventure and let things take their course. Just as you have developed a relationship with your new baby, so has your toddler. Let the two of them get to know each other on their own terms from time to time. And enjoy.

Zynga Explains ?Challenging? Q2: Facebook Platform Changes, Late Launches, Draw Something Drops

Obraz 233Why?did Zynga generate revenue of $332 million versus the analyst-projected $344 million, earning 3 cents per share instead of 5 (and sending the stock off 40% in after-hour trading)? Three big factors, the company said today on the earnings call, in the following order: Facebook platform changes, game launches late in the quarter, and?Draw Something's weakening mobile traffic. Facebook began emphasizing new games in its news feed, notifications, bookmarks and other communication channels at the expense of existing games, chief operating officer John Schappert said. This sent existing games down 15% across the platform (not just Zynga games) and live-action genre games down 34%. Because so many users engaged less often, they bought fewer virtual goods, driving down gross bookings by 9% for the quarter.

New Rochelle, NY, July 26, 2012 Administering high-doses of interleukin-2 (IL-2) has been the preferred treatment for patients with stage IV metastatic melanoma. An article published in the current issue of Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. (http://www.liebertpub.com), explores whether or not this regimen is still the most effective. The article is available free online at the Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals website (http://www.liebertpub.com/cbr).

In the article "Should High-Dose Interleukin-2 Still Be the Preferred Treatment for Patients with Metastatic Melanoma?" (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/cbr.2012.1220) Robert Dillman and colleagues at the Hoag Institute for Research and Education and Hoag Family Cancer Institute, Newport Beach, CA concluded that until long-term survival data for some of the newer drugs are available, patients with stage IV metastatic melanoma who are well enough to be given intensive IL-2 therapy should receive it initially, either alone or in combination with one of the newer therapeutic agents.

"This is an important article that puts into perspective the reasons why IL-2 should continue to be the initial therapy in patients with metastatic melanoma," says Editor Donald J. Buchsbaum, PhD, Division of Radiation Biology, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Life Is But A Dream by Katie m. Berggren
Life Is But A Dream by Katie m. Berggren ~ snag a print here

While lying next to my son who is quickly drifting off to sleep, I?m going over a thought my friend Liz shared this afternoon while we visited: Why is it that, in a home, the two people who are the oldest and most capable of understanding and being alone and sleeping alone, sleep together; and the smallest person, the one who is still learning and trying to understand, sleeps alone?

?

I roll this around in my hazy, sleepy mind ~ not looking at it too closely, not wanting to concentrate directly on it, just wanting to move it around and get its essence, get the general feeling of it. As one would roll a butterscotch candy around the mouth, keeping it moving with the tongue but never sucking too hard, or actually biting. Just wanting to enjoy the flavor and gather the essence.

?

This thought, though, of the smallest one, the one most likely to feel fear, loneliness, uncertainty ~ as the one who is alone through the night? Close, yet alone. It is an interesting thought.

?

As I try to pull a general feeling from this, I find I?m also very open to pulling an image.. What sort of a painting could this contemplation inspire?

?

And in regard to a finished painting stemming from this inspiration: what could it share and what could it teach?
