Questions Surround Girl, 11, Who Died After Fight

Alexandria Martinez, 12, lights a candle for her best friend, Joanna Ramos, 11, at Williard Elementary in Long Beach. (AP)

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? The two 11-year-old girls had planned their after-school fight. When the time came, a few shoves and punches were exchanged, and it was over within a minute. But hours later one of them was dead.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office was investigating how Joanna Ramos could leave the alley near her Long Beach elementary school with a bloody nose and end up dying in an intensive care unit.

The cause of death, and the circumstances behind it left family, friends and authorities confused and seeking answers.

"I personally don't hear of 11-year-old fights like this especially girls. I can't say they never happen but I think everyone was completely caught off-guard by this event." police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said Sunday.

Pratt urged caution about linking the fight to the girl's death with certainty until a coroner's report is released. Police, who have interviewed the other girl involved in the fight, were investigating and said that no arrests are immediately planned.

Joanna returned to an after-school program after the fight, but her mother was called when she wasn't feeling well.

"My daughter started complaining, saying she doesn't feel good, let's go home, so we went to home and I changed her clothes, and she go to sleep, that's the only thing that I know," Joanna's mother, Cecilia Villanueva told KNBC-TV. "We took her to the hospital but it was too late. She was in a coma."

Ramos died at a hospital at 9 p.m. Friday, about six hours after the fight near Willard Elementary, police said. Authorities have not released the girl's name but Villanueva told KNBC the girl who died was her daughter, Joanna.

"I want to know what happened," she said through tears.

Stephanie Guadalupe, a friend of Joanna, said the girls were fighting over a boy.

"I told the teacher and she said she would talk to all the girls on Monday," Guadalupe said.

"They took off their backpacks, and they put their hair in a bun, and then that's when they said 'go' and that's when they started hitting each other," Joanna's friend and classmate Maggie Martinez, who watched the fight, told KNBC.

Martinez and other friends said they tried to stop the fight, but were held back by boys who were watching and wanted it to continue.

"There are times when words do not convey the sense of sadness we feel," Mayor Bob Foster said at a press conference. "This is one of those times."

Opportunity?s a-knockin? at Lucas Oil Stadium

Friday, February 24, 2012.

A lot of time has been spent talking about Kellen Moore being out of his element at the NFL Combine this week and Doug Martin being smack in the middle of it.? The other five Boise State representatives in Indianapolis fall in between.? In Tony Pauline?s rundown of ?who has the most to gain? at SI.com, the Broncos? Shea McClellin and George Iloka are fifth and sixth on the list.? ?McClellin has made a steady climb up draft boards,? writes Pauline. ??He was a devastating pass rusher at defensive end for Boise State, then made the seamless transition to linebacker at the Senior Bowl. ?He's another hybrid prospect who will jump up draft boards with good postings in the 40. ?A time no worse than 4.72 seconds could move him into the late part of the second round.?? Don?t know how Pauline settled on 4.72, but it sounds attainable to me.

On Iloka, Pauline writes: ?In a position group lacking talent, Iloka impressed teams during the Senior Bowl. ?He's currently the top free safety on draft boards around the league. ?If Iloka performs as expected (4.50 seconds and 25 reps on the bench at 225 pounds) he'll likely secure a spot in the early part of the second round.?? Wes Bunting of National Football Post.com said the 40 time is key yesterday on Idaho SportsTalk.? Safety, cornerback and wide receiver are ?stopwatch positions,? according to Bunting.? ?The guys who run fastest tend to go a little bit higher.?

This is what many Kellen Moore watchers have been hoping for.? The former Boise State quarterback will participate in Jon Gruden?s 2012 QB Camp, sitting down with the Monday Night Football analyst for intense X?s and O?s on a segment that will air on ESPNU April 12.? Gruden has flustered many an NFL Draft prospect in the first two seasons of the show, but I?m betting Moore will be in his element.? Kellen is one of 10 quarterbacks invited to participate this spring?a one-hour special featuring all of them is scheduled for April 19 on ESPN.? Meanwhile, Moore?s name will remain part of the program en perpetua.? The quarterbacks room in the new football complex will be named after him.

Longtime Washington State assistant Mike Levenseller will not be Idaho?s offensive coordinator after all.? Vandal coach Robb Akey revealed yesterday that former WSU quarterback Jason Gesser, whose first college coaching job was as Idaho running backs coach last season, has been promoted to OC.? That means Akey still needs running backs, offensive line, and wide receivers coaches.? The consensus is that Levenseller will still land on the Vandal staff in the receivers? post.

Boise State gives Wyoming another try tomorrow at 7200 feet after being pulled down by the Cowboys at 2800 feet four weeks ago.? That 75-64 Bronco loss in Taco Bell Arena may have been the most discouraging of the first Mountain West rotation, coming three days after one of Boise State?s best efforts of the season, the 77-72 overtime loss to UNLV.? But Wyoming shot 66 percent from the field that day and 50 percent from beyond the arc.? What are you gonna do?? Laramie?s been a tough spot for the Broncos, who are 1-6 all-time there with the only win coming during Bobby Dye?s second BSU season back in 1984.

Igor Hadziomerovic has the look of a point guard since his return from injury for Boise State.? The freshman Australian is an accomplished dribbler and clearly loves to handle the ball.? The Broncos move the energy meter when Hadziomerovic starts the offense.? Since missing more than two months due to a broken foot, Hadziomerovic has yet to resume a scorer?s role.? He?s scored only four points in three games, all from the free throw line and has attempted only three shots from the field.? Expect that to change.

As the strongest basketball conference in the West, the Mountain West has a chance at four NCAA Tournament berths next month, according to Andy Glockner?s ?Bubble Watch? at SI.com.? Glockner sees UNLV, New Mexico and San Diego State as locks.? On the bubble?? Colorado State, which has an RPI of No. 30 and a strength-of-schedule rated No. 13.? Think about those numbers.? Writes Glockner: ?The Rams did the deed against New Mexico, taking down the league-leading Lobos for a huge profile-improving win. ?They now travel to San Diego State before hosting UNLV. ?Get one of those two and make the MWC semis? ?Could be enough.?

Tomorrow is Senior Day already for the Boise State women, who have overachieved somewhat in their first Mountain West season.? The Broncos, picked to finish last, look to be headed for a sixth seed in the conference tournament, sitting at 4-8 currently (13-14 overall).? Attendance has been a much harped-upon subject as Boise State has moved up to the Mountain West, and it?s no less important on the women?s side.? Crowd counts are all over the board in the league.? The Broncos are fifth in the conference in women?s attendance, which doesn?t sound so bad.? But look at the progression: New Mexico 6,725, Wyoming 3,235, TCU 2,795, Colorado State 1,232, Boise State 823, UNLV 708, San Diego State 613, and Air Force 578.? Katie Isham, Heather Pilcher and Nicole Brady will be making their final Bronco home appearances tomorrow.?

The Idaho Steelheads will be facing an Idahoan tonight when the host Utah in the second of a three-game series.? Former Steelheads defenseman Cody Lampl, the first true Idahoan ever to play for the team, is still going with the Grizzlies after his trade to Utah during the offseason last year.? Lampl?s penalty minutes have accelerated since the move.? He had 97 PIM?s in 95 games with Idaho over two seasons?and has picked up 84 PIM?s in just 32 games this season with the Grizzlies.? Lampl, who grew up in Ketchum, goes way back with the Steelheads.? As an 11-year-old, he attended the Steelies? second game in franchise history in 1997 in what was then the Bank Of America Centre.

It?s championship week for several Olympic sports at Boise State, and one of them is hosting.? The Bronco wrestling team goes into the Pac-12 Championships Sunday at Taco Bell Arena.? With only six teams sponsoring wrestling in the conference, it will be a one-day meet divided into two sessions.? No. 15 Stanford comes in as the favorite.? Boise State is in serious rebuilding mode this season, with four freshmen and nary a senior among the 10 starters.? The Broncos are led by sophomore Jake Swartz, ranked 10th in the nation at 184 pounds.

This Day In Sports?jumping ahead a day to February 25, 1982, 30 years ago tomorrow:?

Boise State fires Mike Mullally as athletic director after a public outcry over his priority seating plan in Bronco Stadium and names 28-year-old assistant athletic director Gene Bleymaier to the post.? That would begin a Bleymaier tenure that would last almost three decades, encompassing the installation of the blue turf in 1986, a move to Division I-A and the Big West in 1996, a move to the WAC in 2001, and Bronco football?s climb into the top 10 early in the new century.? Bleymaier was fired by president Bob Kustra in August, 2011.

(Tom Scott hosts the Scott Slant segment Sunday nights at 10:30PM on KTVB?s Sunday Sports Extra and anchors five sports segments each weekday on 93.1 The Ticket.? He also served as color commentator on KTVB?s telecasts of Boise State football for 14 seasons.)

Take Your Sole Proprietorship to an LLC in California

Many people, when they first start a business, take the sole proprietorship approach since it's the most basic and easiest business structure to implement. However, for those in the Golden State, many small businesses, including sole proprietorships may find that a limited liability corporation or California LLC can be beneficial option when choosing a structure for their company.

Legal Protections for Owners in an LLC

The benefits of converting to an LLC are multiple. First, a limited liability company creates a legal barrier between a business owner's private status and the business. This is important, particularly if the business is sued. A sole proprietorship makes the owner vulnerable to losing his or her personal assets in the case of a claim. However, an LLC is its own legal entity so the claim damages stop with the business. This protection is not absolute, however. An owner can still be personally liable where the owner personally backs up a business debt, if he comingles his personal money with the business, or if the LLC has no professional insurance or coverage for claims. Additionally, tax agencies can go after owners for tax liabilities of the business.

Legal Protections for Investors in an LLC

In terms of generating investment and operating capital, and LLC has many benefits. Sole proprietorships have to report funding they receive as revenue. An LLC, however, can trade business ownership for investment funds, allowing the business to grow faster. Additionally, investors get protection with an LLC due to the business barrier, protecting them from the business? debts and claims. Again, a sole proprietorship cannot afford this legal protection to its partner owners.

Transferring the LLC Ownership

Because the LLC is its own legal entity, it can be transferred to other owners beyond the first owner that created the business. Ownership transfer can occur by selling the business or giving the ownership away. A sole proprietorship can?t be transferred in this method. Instead, each of its assets has to be transferred individually.

Don't Forget the Paperwork

In California, registering an LLC needs to happen by paying fees and paperwork with the CA Secretary of State?s Office. The cost is not insignificant. Filing a limited liability corporation form and fees can be as much as $900 a year, depending on how the filing is submitted. In addition, there are one-time costs for starting a California LLC for the first time, which add to the expense. Because of the formal filing with the Secretary of State?s Office, LLCs involve far more legal paperwork than a basic small business. Sole proprietorships don?t have to deal with this limited liability corporation form burden. A basic small business can be set up with a simple handshake. An LLC, on the other hand, doesn?t exist without the right paperwork officially approved.

The author has an immense knowledge on California LLC. Know more about limited liability corporation form related info in his website.

Eating citrus fruit may lower women's stroke risk

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? A compound in citrus fruits may reduce your stroke risk, according to research reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. Eating higher amounts of a compound in citrus fruits, especially oranges and grapefruit, may lower ischemic stroke risk. Women who ate high amounts of the compound had a 19 percent lower risk of ischemic stroke than women who consumed the least amount.

This prospective study is one of the first in which researchers examine how consuming flavonoid subclasses affects the risk of stroke. Flavonoids are a class of compounds present in fruits, vegetables, dark chocolate and red wine.

"Studies have shown higher fruit, vegetable and specifically vitamin C intake is associated with reduced stroke risk," said Aed?n Cassidy, Ph.D., the study's lead author and professor of nutrition at Norwich Medical School in the University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom.

"Flavonoids are thought to provide some of that protection through several mechanisms, including improved blood vessel function and an anti-inflammatory effect."

Cassidy and colleagues used 14-years of follow-up data from the Nurse's Health Study, which included 69,622 women who reported their food intake, including details on fruit and vegetable consumption every four years. Researchers examined the relationship of the six main subclasses of flavonoids commonly consumed in the U.S. diet -- flavanones, anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, flavonoid polymers, flavonols and flavones -- with risk of ischemic, hemorrhagic and total stroke.

As expected, the researchers didn't find a beneficial association between total flavonoid consumption and stroke risk, as the biological activity of the sub-classes differ. However, they found that women who ate high amounts of flavanones in citrus had a 19 percent lower risk of blood clot-related (ischemic) stroke than women who consumed the least amounts.

In the study, flavanones came primarily from oranges and orange juice (82 percent) and grapefruit and grapefruit juice (14 percent). However, researchers recommended that consumers increase their citrus fruit intake, rather than juice, due to the high sugar content of commercial fruit juices.

A previous study found that citrus fruit and juice intake, but not intake of other fruits, protected against risk of ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage. Another study found no association between yellow and orange fruits and stroke risk, but did link increased consumption of white fruits like apples and pears with lower stroke risk. An additional study found that Swedish women who ate the highest levels of antioxidants -- about 50 percent from fruits and vegetables -- had fewer strokes than those with lower antioxidant levels.

More studies are needed to confirm the association between flavanone consumption and stroke risk, and to gain a better understanding about why the association occurs, the authors said.

The National Institutes of Health funded the research.

'No-fly' Muslim takes case to court of public opinion

Mustafa Elogbi and his lawyer address media and supporters at Portland International Airport on Monday. six weeks after he was stranded abroad by opaque U.S. security procedures.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Mustafa Elogbi is by nature a private person. But when he finally arrived home after a frightening ordeal with U.S. security officials that cost him six weeks and thousands of dollars, he chose the spotlight.

Elogbi is seeking publicity and threatening legal action against the government for what he says was virtual exile by the U.S. government despite concerns about how the publicity might affect his family.

"I worry about my kids -- there are a lot of good people, but there are some who could try to harm them," the 60-year-old Libyan-American said Monday after clearing Customs at Portland International Airport. "But I think we really didn?t have any other choice."

On Jan. 4, after visiting family and friends in Libya, Elogbi headed home from Tunis, Tunisia, to the United States, where he is a citizen and resident of 33 years. But when his flight landed at London?s Heathrow Airport, he was detained and questioned by security officials who he says told him they were acting on behalf of Washington.

They told him he would not be able to board a flight to the United States, and instead locked him up in solitary confinement at a British detention center for two days, then placed him?on a flight back to Tunis.

Elogbi was shaken and humiliated. His wife, Annie Petrossian, contacted a Portland lawyer immediately, but Elogbi was at first leery of confronting the government.

But his options were limited. Because he was apparently on the U.S. secret "no-fly" list, he could not board any flight to the United States or Canada, which also enforces the list.

The Terrorism Screening Center, operated by the FBI, as a matter of policy, will not confirm nor deny the inclusion of a given person on the no-fly list. About 500 U.S. citizens are on the list, said a representative at the TSC, who asked not to be named. The total number of names on the list -? which includes "known or suspected terrorists" stands at about 21,000.

The Council for American Islamic Relations says it regularly fields calls from Americans ?- mostly Muslims -- who are prevented from boarding and believe they are on the no-fly list. Less than half of those who contact the organization pursue legal action, and fewer still seek publicity, according to CAIR staff attorney Gadeir Abbas. He says this is especially true if they are within the United States, and can take a car or train home.

Previous coverage from msnbc.com

"Part of the reason people don?t share that they are on the no fly list ? (is that) being on the list could have implications for their relationships or standing in the community," said Abbas. "It is a public declaration that the government for whatever reason is suspicious of you."

A few American citizens who have been prevented from boarding flights have made their way back to the United States by boat, train and car. And Abbas said some give up.

"There are definitely folks who were abroad, found themselves on the no-fly list and never returned,? said Abbas. "If the U.S. is impeding your travel back to the U.S ?. it?s just a small jump to speculate about what could happen to you when you return."

But Elogbi said he never considered staying away.

"I lived here for 33 years. Basically I?m an American guy," he said. "This is my home. They cannot chase us out of this country. It?s not going to make me run away from the United States."

With the help of two attorneys, and his wife?s persistent calls to U.S. agencies and her senator, Elogbi ultimately was allowed to fly home. He was required to fly on a U.S. carrier, on an itinerary approved by the U.S. Embassy in Tunis, which was communicating about the case with Washington.

He did not submit to questioning by an FBI agent who contacted him in Tunis, he said, because he wanted a lawyer present. When he did fly, he did so with his Portland lawyer, Tom Nelson, who had escorted another client, Jamal Tarhuni, back from Tunis a week earlier.

Upon arrival, Elogbi was taken aside at U.S. Customs for questioning ? and Nelson was not allowed to be present, the two said. Border authorities confiscated Elogbi?s cell phone and told him to retrieve it later this week at the Portland FBI field office.

The FBI and the State Department have repeatedly declined to comment on the cases, citing privacy concerns.

There are currently two major legal challenges to the Justice Department over its no-fly list.

This could become a third, according to Nelson, who has at least one more no-fly client overseas. He has also been seeking assistance from Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who is the chair of the Senate Select Intelligence Committee, and the press.

"I want to put a spotlight on these people (in the security apparatus," said Nelson. "They want to put a spotlight on me or on us? -- that?s fine. Bring it on. But let?s play by the rules here, let?s play by the Constitution that they are sworn to uphold."

Cleaning not only means that you have to rearrange your software configurations (this is the work of your registry cleaner), you need to tidy up the PC?s physical surroundings also.Normally, dust and dirt will adhere on the network of wires of the Pc, destructive the electromagnetically-vulnerable chips. The CPU heat management system (high temperature sink and enthusiast) can also give up, ultimately resulting in program crashes brought about by overheating. If you can not open up the CPU to make the clear up by yourself, seem for any computer tech for support. Also, spot your laptop or computer in an effectively-ventilated spot.

By global standards, health risks caused by environmental factors are low in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), new studies by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers show.

In an effort to keep those risks low, Emiratis are working with UNC public health researchers to find ways now to avoid problems in the future.

What's more, researchers and officials believe their approach could be used to address similar issues in other rapidly developing nations and regions.

The Middle Eastern nation is one of the fastest growing countries in the world, moving in the past 40 years from a largely nomadic, desert population to a modern country with busy cities, big business and an expanding population.

But modernization can also bring changes that may affect people's health. For instance, ambient air pollution can cause or exacerbate asthma and contamination of drinking water and seafood supplies can contribute to various illnesses, including cancer.

In 2008, officials established the United Arab Emirates Environmental Health Project, funded by the Environment AgencyAbu Dhabi and headed by researchers in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. The project is a multipart endeavor that includes quantitative risk assessment, risk ranking and what officials describe as the most ambitious environmental epidemiological study ever conducted in the country. The results will help leaders make informed decisions on future policy priorities and actions.

"The goal was to assess and prioritize strategies to reduce the pollution-related health risks being made inevitable by growth and development," said Jacqueline MacDonald Gibson, Ph.D., the project's principal investigator and UNC assistant professor of environmental sciences and engineering. "This is believed to be the first time a nation has commissioned a comprehensive model of the national burden of disease from environmental health risks. They are taking a long-term perspective in a world too often focused on short-term thinking."

The results of how MacDonald Gibson and her team from UNC, UAE University and The Rand Corporation, a global public policy research institution, identified and prioritized the risks were published online today (Feb. 22) in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

The research team prepared quantitative risk estimates and then worked with dozens of stakeholders, including leaders of businesses, government agencies, health-care facilities and universities. Fifty-six stakeholders submitted rankings of 14 risk factors in order of priority. They almost unanimously agreed that outdoor air pollution is the greatest risk. Most stakeholders also ranked indoor air pollution as the second most important risk and occupational exposures in industry as third.

There was disagreement on some issues. For example, risk from water pollution was ranked second most important by five stakeholders and least important by four. Those who ranked it least important stressed the nation's drinking water is highly treated with advanced desalination systems and that many people drink bottled water.

Investigators also helped develop a national strategy and action plan, which identified 216 potential initiatives to mitigate health risks. They also developed key performance indicators to measure progress in each risk area. For example, an indicator for indoor air quality would be the percentage of public buildings that enforce indoor smoking bans.

MacDonald Gibson said officials with the World Health Organization's Centre for Environmental Health Activities in Amman, Jordan, which provided project oversight, have said the framework may be a model for similar endeavors in the Middle East and other regions around the world.

Zeinab S. Farah, Ph.D., an independent consultant based in Abu Dhabi and London, was a co-author of the study.

Two other studies from the project also appeared in the current issue of Environmental Health Perspectives. One reported results from a study of the health effects of six air pollutants found in homes. Homes with measurable sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and hydrogen sulfide were twice as likely to report doctor-diagnosed asthma. Also, people living in homes where incense was burned daily (44 percent of households in the study) were twice as likely to report headaches, forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating as those in homes where incense was burned once a week or less. The third study explored cultural differences and the ways the international teams bridged those differences to forge strong, long-lasting relationships.

Taking Note Of What The Doctor Said | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

One can?t always rely on one?s notes especially in the medical field. Doctors need to make observations and diagnoses, and notes on said things can never truly convey everything which needs conveying. It?s at this juncture that medical typing comes into the scene. Also known as medical transcription, this is a method wherein a physician records all his observation and diagnoses made with the use of an audio device and then said recording is transcribed.

Used by people in the field of medicine, this systems allows for a precise image of a patient. This can be seen in hospitals where it?s important to keep a record of every patient for future references; in clinics for physicians to be able to keep track of their patients? progress and; now is also seen in the offices of those in the insurance business where private doctors look at a person?s eligibility via health for policies.

With the advancement made in technology, medical typing has become more high tech these days. Businesses have been established which specializes in transcribing services and a lot of them do business via the internet. Doctor?s observations are done with the use of audio devices and then the file is sent to the business by means of the internet where it is then transcribed and delivered the next day. A lot of these establishments provide as well their customers with an online database which allows the physicians to access the transcriptions from almost anywhere provided that they have internet access.

Transcriptions are about 95% error free and the mistakes that can be found in the documents are usually miniscule. Today, businesses that are into transcribing utilize software that has been developed just for transcribing. When this is finished, somebody from quality control peruses the documents before sending them off to the customer. A person in the field of medicine can discover the cost of having their work transcribed by requesting a quote from the site.

Today, medical typing is a necessity. And getting this service is easy to do. So now physicians will not have to deliberate on the meaning of their notes.

Virginia?s Proposed Ultrasound Law Is an Abomination

So the problem is not just that the woman and her physician (the core relationship protected in Roe) no longer matter at all in deciding whether an abortion is proper. It is that the physician is being commandeered by the state to perform a medically unnecessary procedure upon a woman, despite clear ethical directives to the contrary. (There is no evidence at all that the ultrasound is a medical necessity, and nobody attempted to defend it on those grounds.) As an editorial in the Virginian-Pilot put it recently, ?Under any other circumstances, forcing an unwilling person to submit to a vaginal probing would be a violation beyond imagining. Requiring a doctor to commit such an act, especially when medically unnecessary, and to submit to an arbitrary waiting period, is to demand an abrogation of medical ethics, if not common decency.?*

Lovelorn Liars Leave Linguistic Leads

ScienceDaily (Feb. 13, 2012) ? Online daters intent on fudging their personal information have a big advantage: most people are terrible at identifying a liar. But new research is turning the tables on deceivers using their own words.

"Generally, people don't want to admit they've lied," says Catalina Toma, communication science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "But we don't have to rely on the liars to tell us about their lies. We can read their handiwork."

Using personal descriptions written for Internet dating profiles, Toma and Jeffrey Hancock, communication professor at Cornell University, have identified clues as to whether the author was being deceptive.

The researchers compared the actual height, weight and age of 78 online daters to their profile information and photos on four matchmaking websites. A linguistic analysis of the group's written self-descriptions published in the February issue of the Journal of Communication revealed patterns in the liars' writing.

The more deceptive a dater's profile, the less likely they were to use the first-person pronoun "I."

"Liars do this because they want to distance themselves from their deceptive statements," Toma says.

The liars often employed negation, a flip of the language that would restate "happy" as "not sad" or "exciting" as "not boring." And the fabricators tended to write shorter self-descriptions in their profiles -- a hedge, Toma expects, against weaving a more tangled web of deception.

"They don't want to say too much," Toma says. "Liars experience a lot of cognitive load. They have a lot to think about. They less they write, the fewer untrue things they may have to remember and support later."

Liars were also careful to skirt their own deception. Daters who had lied about their age, height or weight or had included a photo the researchers found to be less than representative of reality, were likely to avoid discussing their appearance in their written descriptions, choosing instead to talk about work or life achievements.

The toolkit of language clues gave the researchers a distinct advantage when they re-examined their pool of 78 online daters.

"The more deceptive the self-description, the fewer times you see 'I,' the more negation, the fewer words total -- using those indicators, we were able to correctly identify the liars about 65 percent of the time," Toma says.

A success rate of nearly two-thirds is a commanding lead over the untrained eye. In a second leg of their study, Toma and Hancock asked volunteers to judge the daters' trustworthiness based solely on the written self-descriptions posted on their online profiles.

"We asked them to tell us how trustworthy the person who wrote each profile was. And, as we expected, people are just bad at this," Toma says. "They might as well have flipped a coin ... They're looking at the wrong things."

About 80 percent of the 78 profiles in the study, which was supported by the National Science Foundation, strayed from the truth on some level.

"Almost everybody lied about something, but the magnitude was often small," Toma says.

Weight was the most frequent transgression, with women off by an average of 8.5 pounds and men missing by 1.5 pounds on average. Half lied about their height, and nearly 20 percent changed their age.

Studying lying through online communication such as dating profiles opens a door on a medium in which the liar has more room to maneuver.

"Online dating is different. It's not a traditional interaction," Toma says.

For one, it's asynchronous. The back-and-forth of an in-person conversation is missing, giving a liar the opportunity to respond at their leisure or not at all. And it's editable, so the first telling of the story can come out exactly like the profile-writer would like.

"You have all the time in the world to say whatever you want," Toma says. "You're not expected to be spontaneous. You can write and rewrite as many times as you want before you post, and then in many cases return and edit yourself."

Toma says the findings are not out of line with what we know about liars in face-to-face situations.

"Online daters' motivations to lie are pretty much the same as traditional daters'," she says. "It's not like a deceptive online profile is a new beast, and that helps us apply what we can learn to all manners of communication"

But don't go looking just yet for the dating site that employs Toma's linguistic analysis as a built-in lie detector.

"Someday there may be software to tell you how likely it is that the cute person whose profile you're looking at is lying to you, or even that someone is being deceptive in an e-mail," Toma says. "But that may take a while."
