US senator calls Jerusalem Israel's capital

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An influential Republican senator has called Jerusalem the capital of Israel, taking a stand on an explosive issue between Israel and the Palestinians.

The fate of Jerusalem is one of the most intractable issues in the Mideast conflict with both Israelis and Palestinians claiming rights to the city.

In his first official visit to the country, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio told Israel's president on Wednesday that Jerusalem is "of course the capital of your country." He reiterated America's bipartisan support for Israel.

Rubio, a favorite of his party's conservative wing, met Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

His visit comes ahead of President Barack Obama's scheduled visit in March. Obama has not made a similar declaration about Jerusalem.

Hold the fries: We're eating less fast food

By Steve James, NBC News contributor

Americans? love affair with fast food may be far from over, but there are signs we may be cutting down on French fries, greasy burgers and other artery-clogging food, according to a new study.

Matt Cardy / Getty Images

A survey released on Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that, on average, adults consumed about 11.3 percent of their daily calorie intake from fast food in the 2007-2010 period ? a drop from 12.8 percent in 2003-2006.

The CDC noted that more frequent fast-food consumption is associated with higher energy and fat intake and lower intake of healthful nutrients.

During 2007?2010, the highest percentage of calories from fast food was consumed among adults aged 20?39, the survey said. But among non-Hispanic black adults in that group, 21 percent of their calories were consumed from fast food. Cheryl Fryar, one of the authors of the study, said that while calorie intake was higher in young blacks than young whites, there was little racial or ethnicity differences in older Americans. She noted that the percentage of fast-food calories in the diet dropped to as low as 6 percent in the 60-plus age group. There was little difference between men and women, she said.

Bethene Ervin, the other author of the CDC survey, declined to draw any conclusions from the results. ?We do not do public health,? she said. ?(But) the lower calories from fast food may indicate that the public health messages are getting through.? Other nutrition experts said it might show that Americans are eating more salads and other healthy alternatives offered by fast-food chains.

The survey results come almost 10 years after the film ?Supersize Me? highlighted the danger of diets heavy on fast food, such as hamburgers, French fries and pizza. In the film, director Morgan Spurlock ate only McDonald's food for 30 days. As a result, he gained 24.5 pounds (11.1 kg), his body mass increased by 13 percent and his cholesterol level shot up to 230. It took Spurlock fourteen months to lose the weight gained from his experiment. Madelyn Fernstrom, a nutritional scientist and diet and nutrition editor for TODAY, said the CDC numbers were ?a big surprise for two reasons.

?Firstly, that it is not what we hear about everyone chowing down on fast food for every meal. It is surprising that fast-food calorie content is now only 11 percent, that?s a big drop. Is it that the message about excess fat, calories and salt is getting through? Or that people are choosing healthier options??

Fernstrom said the second significant finding was that the fast-food calorie intake dropped dramatically as people age. ?It could be cost related, or is it because people are becoming more health conscious?? She said it was expected that there would be higher calorie consumption in the 20-39 age group as younger people do not think so much about the health effects of food.

?Maybe you don?t listen at 30, but you do at 60 when you are more vulnerable to clogged arteries of high blood pressure.?

Keith Ayoob, director of the nutrition clinic at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, said there is evidence that the obesity epidemic in the United States is beginning to plateau, ?so these results aren't hugely surprising.?

Commenting on the lower fast-food calorie intake, he said it was not clear if people were cutting back on how often they went to fast food restaurants or simply ordered healthier menu options. ?Nowadays, they're offering a whole plethora of lower-calorie alternatives,? such as salads, low-fat dressings, low-calorie yogurt or desserts, smaller portions, low-fat and fat-free milk and water.

?It's no longer about where you eat, it's about what you choose when you're there.? I can't say for sure, but I believe McDonald's is still doing robust business, and if more of that is coming from lower-calorie foods, salads, fresh fruit, etc., then that's terrific,? Ayoob told NBCNews.com.

?It takes people a long time to change their ways and habits, but when they change them for the better and learn to enjoy the change, that's a win-win,? he said.

Also on Thursday, the CDC released the results of another nutrition survey ? on adolescents -- but its conclusions were less striking. Comparing 1999-2000 with 2009-2010, it found that boys and girls aged 2-19 both consumed more protein and fewer carbohydrates but there was no notable difference in fat consumption.

Radwanska reaches Dubai quarters, Serena withdraws

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska led several of the top seeds into the Dubai Championships quarterfinals on a Wednesday overshadowed by the withdrawal of Serena Williams because of a back injury.

Williams, who became the oldest top-ranked woman Monday, said she's had a sore back and ankle since the Australian Open, though she still reached the final in Qatar last weekend.

Her departure, announced 45 minutes before she was to face 11th-ranked Marion Bartoli, came a day after second-ranked Victoria Azarenka, who beat Williams in the Doha final, withdrew because of a right foot bone bruise.

"I've just had some back problems the past couple weeks. It didn't get better," Williams said. "I thought it would get better as the week went on, but it didn't. I don't want to keep pushing it and make it worse."

Former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki joined Radwanska in the quarters, brushing aside an error-prone Zheng Jie of China 6-1, 6-0. Former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur beat Hseih Su-wei 6-4, 6-0.

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova also got past former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 7-6 (1).

The only upset was fourth-seeded Angelique Kerber, who racked up 10 double faults in falling to Roberta Vinci of Italy 5-7, 6-1.

Radwanska had a tougher-than-expected test in winning 7-5, 6-3 against Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, who has only beaten two top 50 players.

Slow to adjust to slower court conditions from the previous week in Doha, the fourth-ranked Radwanska was down a break in both sets. After a five-minute rain delay in the first set, the Pole broke back to make it 4-4 and then won the set when Putintseva missed easy shots.

The 101st-ranked Putintseva broke to go up 2-1 in the second, but Radwanska broke right back and later won three straight games to finish off the match.

"Even when I didn't play my best tennis today, I was really fighting for every point and just happy, especially about the first set, that I could come back and then win that match in two sets," Radwanska said.

After a 2012 marked by injuries and disappointment at the Grand Slams, Wozniacki said her confidence was back. It has shown in the past two weeks, where she lost a close match to Radwanska and has only lost five games this week.

"I'm making the right decisions on court in terms of where I play the ball and, you know, not force myself to do things that aren't necessary," said Wozniacki, who was back in the top 10. "That's mostly it, you know, the understanding of the game. And just enjoying being out there."

Kvitova struggled for much of her match with her serve ? finding the mark with only 57 percent of her first serves and committing eight double faults, one of which cost her a game when she was serving for the first set.

"It started pretty well. Then Ana tried to play quite aggressively, and then I had some trouble," the eighth-ranked Kvitova said. "So she came back. She served quite well."

Bartoli received a walkover and will face Wozniacki, the 2011 champion, in the quarterfinals.

Sports, shared activities are 'game changers' for dad/daughter relationships

Feb. 19, 2013 ? The most frequent turning point in father-daughter relationships is shared activity -- especially sports -- ahead of such pivotal events as when a daughter marries or leaves home, according to a study by Baylor University researchers.

"This is the masculine style of building closeness -- called 'closeness in the doing' -- whereas the feminine orientation is talking, 'closeness in the dialogue,'" said Mark T. Morman, Ph.D., a professor of communication in Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences.

An article about the findings by Morman and former Baylor graduate student Elizabeth Barrett is published in the Journal of Human Communication.

When asked what key experiences changed closeness in their relationships, fathers and daughters who were study participants mentioned events typical of those that help cement masculine friendships. Morman noted that the study is qualitative -- based on written responses by participants rather than by a statistical analysis. But it reveals meaningful markers of when relationships changed, regardless of whether they became closer or more distant, he said.

The 43 fathers and 43 daughters in the study were not related to one another but were asked to pinpoint in writing a crucial moment of change in their own father-daughter relationships. Daughters in the study were required to be at least age 22, while fathers ranged from 45 to 70. Adoptive and step-family relationships were among those included.

"These (turning points) . . . were independent of some type of family history," Morman said.

Most frequently mentioned of 14 relationship changes by daughters were engaging activities with their fathers, their marriages and physical distance from their fathers. Fathers most frequently mentioned joint activities, a daughter's marriage and the beginning of a daughter's dating.

Other pivotal times noted by both fathers and/or daughters in the study were adolescence, a family crisis, parents' divorce, a daughter's financial independence, giving birth, entering elementary school, high school graduation, a daughter's developing outside friendships, a daughter's maturation/beginning a friendship with her father and poor decisions on a daughter's part.

Daughters weigh in on turning points

    -- Shared Activities:

Sports, working together and vacationing together were the shared activities most frequently mentioned.

Many daughters said they became closer to their fathers when they began to play a sport, an intimacy in which the father is the "primary playmate" as daughters learn to compete, take risks and stand up for themselves.

Sports gave daughters a chance to be the center of their dad's attention. "It made me feel really important," one woman wrote. Another said that "I used to love it when my dad would take off work to come coach my softball team."

Working together was another life-changing shared activity.

"Growing up, I didn't see much of my dad because he was at the office," one daughter wrote. But through working together, "now I know him on so many different levels."

A third shared activity was vacationing, several daughters said. "The first time I really talked with my dad, I was 6 years old. We took a road trip together and talked about everything," one woman wrote.

    -- Marriage:

A daughter's marriage was the second most frequently reported turning point -- sometimes bringing them closer together, usually due to gaining a father's approval of their husbands -- but many reported the marriage distanced them somewhat because the father was no longer the protector and provider.

    --Leaving Home:

The third most mentioned shift for daughters was when they left home for the first time, often to attend college. Some felt they lost touch; others felt a strain was lifted as they had their own space and developed a friendship with their dad rather them viewing him as a provider, adviser and disciplinarian.

    Fathers' Perspectives

    -- Shared Activities:

Sports was the most frequently mentioned activity by fathers, with some saying it gave them a bond their daughter did not have with her mother or siblings. Others said it opened the lines of communication to talk about other subjects. Additional activities fathers mentioned were church functions, household projects and teaching their daughters to drive.

One father even learned how to sing so he could be in a school talent show with his daughter.

    --Marriage:

Marriage, the second most frequent turning point mentioned by fathers, was crucial, regardless of whether it strengthened or weakened the relationship. Said one father: "She became dependent on her husband instead of me, and I determined not to interfere to the point of driving a wedge between her husband and me."

On the flip side, one father said that being involved in her daughter's wedding plans gave him a reason to talk regularly to her.

    --Daughter Begins Dating:

Fathers attempted to fiercely protect their daughters during this time, worrying constantly about them, and as a whole, their closeness lessened.

"She communicated more with her mother about personal matters and less with me," one man reported.

As their "little girls" grew into young women, fathers realized they could not shelter them forever and were forced to begin "letting go."

Benefits of Playing Sports - Shaka Smart Basketball Camps LLC

    February 19, 2013

Whether it?s on a school team, recreational league or in the summer during Shaka Smart Basketball Camps, playing a sport has numerous benefits.

Most people already know the physical benefits kids achieve with athletic activity, such as cutting the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. There are also social and psychological benefits of getting involved in athletics while in school.

Apparently most high school students (and their parents) agree! More than 7.6 million high school students?that?s more than 55 percent?played sports during the 2010-2011 school year, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.

High school athletes who regularly play sports do a better job of avoiding negative activities. They are less likely to abuse drugs or smoke, based on findings in the National Household Survey of Drug Abuse. Studies also show that, in addition to avoiding drugs and cigarettes, female athletes have a lower risk of breast cancer and depression. They are also less likely to engage in sexual activity at a young age and show more interest in education, according to The Women?s Sports Foundation Report. Other research has shown that playing sports also improves grades, standardized test scores and school attendance.

Many speculate that being involved in on a team or playing for an organization gives students a sense of pride and builds self-esteem. Coaches and teammates often provide positive reinforcement for healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating well and getting enough rest prior to competition. This likely reduces the influence of negative peer pressure. Also, if playing on a school-sponsored team, grades must be kept at a certain level. This incentive often keeps athletes? heads in the game as well as in the books!

Of course, basketball is only one of the sports available for student athletes. There are numerous options offered at schools, recreation and parks and other leagues, including baseball, golf, hockey, tennis, track and field, swimming, soccer, wrestling, gymnastics and lacrosse. Also, keep in mind that playing multiple sports will exercise different muscles and use a wider range of skills.

Improving Self-Esteem Helps with Anxiety, Depression

Everyone experiences self-doubt from time to time, but when it becomes overwhelming there may be a deeper issue.

People who have depression are thought to lack an optimistic view of themselves, of others, and of the world in general. Healthy individuals, by contrast, tend to see themselves and their surroundings in a more positive, hopeful light.

People who have an anxiety-related illness feel more stressed out than healthy people. They worry about the future, their decisions, and their loved ones to the point of distraction.

Self-esteem issues can affect people with anxiety, as it makes them question their choices much more than a healthy person would. People who have an anxiety disorder may find it difficult to enjoy a normal life if constantly feeling the need to question themselves.

One woman in the United Kingdom learned to feel better about herself after being treated professionally for her mental health conditions. She found that she could use art to improve her self-esteem and relieve some of her negative feelings and worry.

The help the woman sought was actually a course designed to teach women to feel more self-confident and to value themselves. Group self-improvement courses taught by licensed professionals can be a great resource for people who are not ready to try therapy.

To find more details on self-improvement courses and how they aided the woman from the article, click on the link below.

RED Sues Sony Over F65, F55 and F5 Cine Cameras; Seeks to Stop Sales and Have Them (Literally) Destroyed

    RED v Sony

Here?s some damages you don?t see in your everyday lawsuit? RED is asking a court to have existing Sony cameras destroyed.

RED brought the lawsuit today in federal court against Sony due to the technology inside of Sony?s F65, F55 and F5 cinema cameras ? claiming that it infringes on two of RED?s patents. RED is asking the court to force Sony to stop making and selling the cameras and that Sony should surrender all profits derived from the previous sale of the cameras.

Additionally, RED asks the court to force Sony ?to deliver up and destroy all infringing cameras.? Ouch.

As interesting as that turn of events could be, the chances are that any judgment against Sony would simply result in damages and reasonable royalties being paid to RED for the?patent infringement?(assuming the patents are valid). Of course, this assumes further that the case even makes it to trial.

RED asked for a preliminary injunction as part of this lawsuit, which means there should be a hearing in short order to ascertain whether or not RED has a likelihood of success in the end. If the court finds RED is likely to succeed in this case, then it would probably enjoin Sony from selling the offending cameras during the process of the lawsuit. Such a finding would likely motivate Sony to settle out of court.

Any other finding in the preliminary injunction hearing could see this lawsuit dragging on for quite some time (possibly several years).

?The president had the opportunity in his State of the Union Address to share with Congress and the American people how he plans to solve the most serious challenges our country faces. Unfortunately, the president offered many of the same failed policies that have resulted in record levels of debt and chronically high unemployment. If government spending was the key to prosperity, our economy woul...d be running on all cylinders right now. But after four years of deficits exceeding $1 trillion dollars, more than 23 million Americans are still struggling to find work. Reckless fiscal policy is hurtful in the short-term and will be devastating in the long run. Record deficits ? driven by spending, not lack of revenue ? are standing in the way of much needed economic growth and job creation. Likewise, the best investment we can make for the future is to stop spending money we do not have today. Unsustainable levels of deficit spending will inevitably lead to higher interest rates in the future ? making purchases such as a home, a car and a college education more expensive for everyone and financially out of reach for many. Without spending cuts and entitlement reform, America will remain on the fast-track to fiscal collapse. A debt crisis would be devastating, most of all to the middle class and all those who aspire to be in the middle class. Limited government and free enterprise are fundamental to growing and strengthening the middle class and preserving the American Dream. While tough decisions must be made to avert a debt crisis and put America back on a strong, prosperous path, the solutions are all within reach. That is why, I will continue to fight tooth and nail to restore fiscal sanity in Washington; cut red tape that inhibits job creation; enact comprehensive pro-growth tax reform; and save our entitlement programs for current and future generations.? -Representative Diane Black (R-TN 6th District)See More
