Kurd murder suspect placed under investigation in France

PARIS (Reuters) - A suspect detained last week over the killing of three Kurdish rebel activists in Paris was placed under formal investigation for murder on Monday, the Paris prosecutor said.

Thirty-year-old Omer Guney was the driver of one of the women who were shot in the head on January 9 at an institute linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), Prosecutor Fran?ois Molins said.

Guney, who told prosecutors he had been a PKK member for two years, denied the charges.

"The presence of Omer Guney in the apartment within the time frame during which the triple murder took place, and without an explanation from him, gives us serious clues that suggest his participation in the acts committed on January 9," Molins said.

According to investigators, video surveillance showed that Guney was in the apartment, or at least in the building, for 45 minutes at around the time of the murders.

One of the victims was a founding member of the PKK - which took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984 with the aim of carving out a Kurdish homeland in the southeast of Turkey.

The PKK has blamed the killings on shadowy elements within the Turkish state - which considers it a terrorist organization - or foreign powers.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said initial evidence in the triple murder suggested the motive may be an internal feud in the PKK or a desire to derail peace talks.

The Turkish government announced this month that it had begun discussing with jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan how to end the conflict.

Inauguration 2013: what to see and when. (Don?t wait ?til Monday.)

There is plenty to see and hear in Inauguration 2013's public ceremonies Monday, but the real action, constitutionally speaking, takes place the day before.

    By Monitor Staff / January 19, 2013

If you wait until Monday to turn on your TV to watch all the pomp and ceremony of Inauguration Day ? and there will be plenty to see ? you will have already missed the actual, constitutionally ordained moment that President Obama is sworn in for a second term in office.

But fear not, you can see that too.

Thanks to a quirk of the calendar, the day mandated by the Constitution for one presidential term to expire and another to begin, Jan. 20, falls this year on a Sunday, the one day of the week Washington doesn?t do inaugurals.

So Mr. Obama, as well as Vice President Biden, will take their respective official oaths of office in private swearing-in ceremonies on Sunday, Mr. Biden at 8:55 in the morning at the Naval Observatory and Obama in the White House Blue Room at 11:55. (The last president to have such a private swearing-in was Ronald Reagan in 1985.)

But ?private? is a relative term, and mostly means no bands, no singing, no speeches, and no cast-of-thousands hoopla. That?s Monday.

On Sunday, however, TV cameras will also be there, so you can watch live as Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administers the oath to Obama on all the major broadcast and cable networks. In the earlier ceremony, Biden will be sworn in by Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Both justices will be pressed back into duty on Monday for the bigger show, which will feature, as its centerpiece, Obama's Inaugural Address.

As to Monday?s more public festivities, TV coverage begins in the morning, with morning news shows segueing into exclusive inaugural coverage, the precise times varying by network, and ends in mid-afternoon. It?ll be hard to miss.

The main spectacle, of course, is the public swearing-in ceremony that begins on the western steps of the US Capitol at 11:30 a.m. This will be followed at 1 p.m. by an inaugural luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies and at 2:30 by the Inaugural Parade.

Among the musical highlights of the inaugural ceremonies are performances by the United States Marine Band, PS 22 of Staten Island, N.Y., the Lee University Festival Choir from Cleveland, Tenn., and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

James Taylor will offer a rendition of ?America the Beautiful? after Biden takes the oath of office.

The president then takes the oath of office (Obama?s fourth if you count the famous re-do in 2009) after which he delivers his Inaugural Address, the content of which is still secret.

After Obama concludes, pop rock singer Kelly Clarkson, of ?American Idol? fame, will sing ?My Country, ?Tis of Thee.?

She is followed by Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco, and Rev. Luis Leon of St. John's Church, pastor of the Episcopal church known as ?the church of the presidents,? who will offer a benediction.

The ceremony winds up with a performance by the day?s biggest musical name, Beyonc?, a prominent supporter of Obama?s during his reelection campaign, who will sing the national anthem.

If, instead of watching all this from the comfort of your home, you are planning to be among the estimated 800,000 Washington visitors and residents expected to fill the Mall and line the route for the Inaugural Parade, dress warmly.

Early morning temperatures on the mostly cloudy day are expected to be in the 20s, climbing to the mid-30s by noon. A passing flurry is possible in the afternoon.

How To Artify Your Home | Conservative Refuge - Old Mans Home ...

Would you like to make your house feel more like a home? Is it comfortable enough, but not really special? If so, I have some easy ?arty? tips to make your environment that bit more special.

Before you start making any alterations, or adding anything, you need to clean and declutter. This helps you to see rooms more clearly and what space you have to utilise. When this is done you can start to improve your surroundings.

Use enticing aromas. How much nicer it is to enter a room with a lovely aroma than one with the usual household smells such as pet odour, cooking smells or stale smoke. Certain scents have the power to promote clarity of mind and positive thoughts. Start using scented candles, incense or aromatherapy oils or sprays regularly.

Hang beautiful artwork. Make your home completely unique by having original artwork on your walls. You don?t have to pay thousands for gorgeous contemporary artworks. Many websites, including mine, have beautiful paintings for sale at really reasonable prices. What a talking point your original artwork will make when you have guests.

Say it with flowers. A lovely floral display not only looks fabulous but also provides a fresh smell. Try to display flowers in an nconventional way by using unique containers or putting together plants and flowers which are not usually displayed together.

Uplift with colour. If you are unsure about using bold or more vibrant colour than usual, simply paint in one wall in a room with a bold accent. This way you will get a lift without being overpowered by strong colour.

Use lighting. Either table lamps or floor lamps can create a wonderful ambience in any room. Light up dark corners for a homely glow.

Feng Shui. Try rearranging your furniture for a more peaceful and positive environment. Feng Shui is an ancient philosophy which tells us that how we arrange our home has a direct effect on our fortunes. There is plenty of information on the Internet and in books about how you can make positive changes by rearranging your furniture to promote more positive energy flow through your home. All of these easy and inexpensive tips will help you to turn your house in to a real home.

Gail Miller is a professional artist whose artwork is a visual feast of colour and fun. Her fascination with bold colours and fluid, expressive shapes and line are evident in funky abstracts, sinuous nudes, vibrant still life paintings and lively townscapes.

1953 Hillyard Farm - Paul Terrell Family home - New Vienna Ohio ...

Second in a series of articles about The New Vienna Pilgrimage of Old Houses continues in spring 1953. ?Transcription?follows.

New Vienna Pilgrimage of Old Houses ??

[From the Wilmington News-Journal, Spring 1953 ? copied from an undated clipping at the Clinton County Historical Society.]

Hillyard Farm Rich in Old Furniture

Terrell Family Has Owned House for 40 Years

(Editors Note: The New Vienna Pilgrimage of old houses will open the county?s observance of Ohio?s sesquicentennial and will be held June 6 and 7 [1953].? The owners of the houses have written the histories of their properties and told some of the interesting architectural points and the furnishings and other pieces which they contain.? Proceeds of the ticket sale for the pilgrimage will go to the Clinton County Historical Society.? The following is the story of the Paul Terrell residence.)

Hillyard Farm located one mile northeast of New Vienna on the highest elevation in Clinton county (1,197 feet), has been in possession of the Terrell family for 40 years, having been purchased from the Posegate family who had owned it nearly a century.? The original deeds are not recorded, but it is mentioned in one deed that the Posegate family purchased at least part of the land from the Clevenger family, who with Abner and Morgan Van Meter were considered to be the earliest settlers of this county.

Earliest records available state that Abner Van Meter and S. Clevenger resided on this land.? There have been at least three other houses on this farm as evidenced by the broken chimney brick, glass and chinaware.

An overflowing spring located at present within the farm pond, was used by wild animals as a source of water and they in turn were used for food by Indian bands.? This fact is proven by the large numbers of arrowheads and other stone implements which have been found around this area from time to time.? Many of these Indian relics are in perfect condition.

This house, like many others, is a combination of the old and the more modern.? The old Posegate house was L-shaped and the L has been filled in to make a square.? The two front rooms and the dining room are the original parts of the house.

THE HOME is furnished with several antiques, a number of which are family heirlooms.? In this group will be found a grandfather clock which has been in the family for five generations.? It was first known to be a wall - sweep, having later been put in its present case.? The case for this clock and a large bookcase also in the home were both made out of walnut logs taken from the first Friends meeting house which stood just north of New Vienna.? The land and logs for this meeting house were donated by Micajah Nordyke, the great-great-grandfather of the present owner of the clock.? Nordyke came to Ohio from Tennessee in 1806.

Several other pieces which will be of interest to antique-lovers include chairs, drop leaf tables, chests, cherry china cabinet, four-poster bed, and an inlaid desk which several competent judges have declared to be a choice piece of early furniture.

In addition to the various pieces and furnishings to be seen at any time at Hillyard Farm there will be two collections loaned for the occasion and of surpassing interest. ?Mrs. Robert Metcalf of Columbus, will bring her collection of fans to be on display Sunday. ?Mrs. Frances Dobbs, of Indianapolis, will bring her?collection?of old and unusual ink wells and they may be seen on both days of the pilgrimage.

The following will be hostesses: ?Mrs. Harold [Garnet]?Fisher, Mrs. Charles [Virginia] Hildebrant, Mrs. Elmer [Eva?] Southerland, Mrs. Howard [Hazel] Penn, Miss Geneva Johnson, Mrs. Arthur McCoy [Eva] and Miss Janet Terrell, daughter in the family. ?

Another house in the New Vienna Pilgrimage of Old Houses was posted under "Historic Hause House, built 1874," and featured a picture of Charlotte Pugsley Hause. ?The Hause article, about the house on Bernard Road near Huffman Ave. could have been titled differently. ?The house was owned by the Hines family from 1874-1917, the Elmer Pages 1917-1942, Wilbur Huffmans 1942-1952, and the Hauses in the 1950s.

Other houses part of the 1953 New Vienna Pilgrimage of Old Houses yet to be featured include:

Special master says prison mental health care inadequate, suicides ...

A court-appointed monitor on Friday told federal judges that mental health care in California?s prisons remains inadequate and in some areas is deteriorating, especially in regard to inmate suicides.

The legal filing is a setback to Gov. Jerry Brown?s push for California to take back full control of the prison system, which he argues no longer mistreats those in its custody. Brown last week asked a panel of federal judges to lift population caps on the state's 33 prisons and asked one of those judges to dismiss the 2001 class action over mental health care, Coleman vs. Brown.

Special master Matthew Lopes in his report Friday noted gains in how the state documents and reports mental health care, but not in how California is geared to improve those conditions. He cited needed changes that went undone because of a lack in statewide monitoring and central oversight -- steps he said California would need to address if it were to take over mental health care on its own.

Lopes was especially critical of suicide rates in California prisons.

He said there were at least 32 suicides in state prisons in 2012, averaging one suicide every 11 days. Lopes notes that translates to almost 24 suicides per 100,000 inmates, an increase over 2011, and well above the national suicide rate of 16 deaths per 100,000 prisoners.

The state's high suicide rate prompted a 2010 court order to adopt suicide prevention practices. Lopes said the state has made progress on those steps, but fewer than one out of four prisons hold suicide prevention team meetings as required, and only three prisons complied with the requirement for five-day follow-ups of inmates discharged from crisis care.

"The problem of inmate suicides in CDCR prisons must be resolved before the remedial phase of the Coleman case can be ended," Lopes wrote. "The gravity of this problem calls for further intervention. To do any less and to wait any longer risks further loss of lives."

"Save This Person To My Tree" - Family Tree Maker software ...

Well I would like to BUT ...I had difficulty with this when they were trialling the Beta version recently and reverted back to the old version. However, it now appears that the Beta version has been defaulted and over the past week whenever I try to "Save This Person To My Tree" absolutely nothing happens. I am running FTM 2012 on Win 7. Is there anyway I can let the programmers know what is happening?

Smart TV's ? Using Your TV's Browser to Shop Online

Smart TV viewers are cutting the cord on traditional television and moving swiftly to embrace the next generation of entertainment sources. Nearly 160 million homes worldwide were expected to have at least one smart TV by the end of 2012, according to the market strategy firm The Diffusion Group. By 2017, look for that number to triple.
Household entertainment sources are entering a world of "always on" connectivity, as viewers drop traditional cable subscription models. Streaming channels and networks that are accessible on tablets, laptops, mobile devices and even desktop PCs, all within the same household, are becoming an increasingly common scenario. Increasingly, Smart TVs are integrating Internet services directly into the hardware, rather than relying on set-top boxes such as those provided by companies like Apple, Google and Roku.

This could have a strong impact on how we watch programming, how we buy over the Internet and the next steps in ecommerce.

Dramatic Rise of the Smart TV

Viewers started changing their cable TV watching habits in early 2011. By the end of that year, media industry watchgroup PaidContent.org reported that over a million individuals had cut the cord with cable and satellite TV providers in place of streaming services such as Netflix and using the Web as a primary source of entertainment.

The early set-top boxes included many features now present in smart TVs. Today, Slingbox and others advertise their devices on radio, the Internet and via mobile ads. Users are more open to adopting streaming technologies. Netflix and Hulu are seen as being among the pioneers of streaming media for the television and other screens. Though set-top boxes and smart TVs currently co-exist, it?s more apparent at 2012's end that these boxes will fall out of favor, as televisions are replaced during the regular shopping cycle and during major holiday sales events.

    Embracing Ecommerce through the Remote

The use of the Internet on a smart TV brings ecommerce to the living room. Shopping via TV is nothing new. Consumers have been buying products offered via late-night infomercials and home-shopping networks since the 1980s. They will have even more ability for online shopping through TV, as large brands will offer buying applications (along with the ability to access any website using the remote).

Three major models of income streams are expected to make up most of the low-hanging fruit for smart TV manufacturers, content providers and online businesses. These include:

    • App sales
    • Content revenue sharing
    • Advertising
As a vehicle for delivering content and marketing messages, smart TVs grow to become an ever-increasing battleground for online retailers seeking entry into the living room. The glaring difference of smart TVs and traditional TV setups is the introduction of apps and content revenue sharing. People can shop via the Web from their smart TVs, and it becomes a marketplace for businesses rather than a marketing channel.

    Fewer Ads, More Media

One of the benefits to viewers for streaming TV is the noticeable lack of advertising content to support the programming. For years, consumers have gotten network TV for "free," supported by advertising. Cable TV introduced subscription services to viewers, and today, streaming TV viewers are willing to spend under $10 a month with services like Netflix for streaming content without ads.

Adding Value to the Living Room Centerpiece

Today's manufactured smart TVs come packed with Web-enabled features that seem to do everything. They make even three-year-old TV models look antiquated by comparison. It's the same way that our smartphones make those old flip-top cell phones look like antiques as well.
    Today's smart TVs have ...
    • the ability to stream movies, music, and shows on demand
    • specialized applications for entertainment and learning
    • full integration with social networks like Facebook and Twitter to keep up with feeds
    • the latest news, weather, and financial data
On a hardware level, smart TVs let users access the Internet regularly. As consumers upgrade their new television sets, manufacturers continue to pour added features into the smart TVs. Internet usage will grow and numbers of online shoppers buying via their smart TVs are expected to increase.

    Entertainment Demands by the Numbers

Today, nearly 900 million homes worldwide subscribe to pay-TV, according to eCommerce Times. Moving those subscribers to new streaming entertainment options is in the line of sight for manufacturers and programmers alike.

Consumers are already viewing content and shopping over the Web via their phones, tablets and computer screens?how quickly will they be wiling to upgrade their TV sets? That's a big question mark for those covering the industry.

Consumers have voiced their "must haves" about the needs and wants built into smart TVs, according to Statista.com. They include smart TV staples like Netflix, YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, Pandora and ESPN.

Applications for smart TVs reflect directly on the most popular websites on the Web. This makes it easy to understand how a smart TV may integrate into the household, because it would provide the same entertainment found through different platforms.

    A Shift in Strategy

The introduction of smart television sets into the household and their dramatic adoption by consumers represents a new paradigm. Businesses will gain a new of opportunity to compete for consumer dollars without the traditional, obtrusive method of advertising and aggressive marketing. And consumers will be more in control of the messages they take in. No longer will commercials be blaring away in the background of a home.

Content becomes a vehicle for businesses to share their messages and deliver a higher level of satisfaction and value rather than disrupting the entertainment of its users. The non-passive ability to interact with TV programs, browse movie databases for information, and use applications turns the smart TV into a valuable commodity for both consumer and producer.

The trends and predictions show great favor in the adoption of these smart TVs. Look for 2013 to be a breakout year for the rise of smart TVs in the home, and the future of commerce taking a dramatic shift forward in the near future.

FLOTUS Has Landed: Michelle Obama Launches Official Twitter Account

It's a big day for the first lady: She's turning 49 and she's starting an official First Lady Twitter account. While Michelle Obama had been on Twitter before (@MichelleObama), her old account was restricted to campaign usage. With the new @FLOTUS account, she'll be able to tweet about official (and, hopefully, not-so-official) First Lady Business.

While she only has two tweets so far (both written by staffers), Michelle O. has already racked up nearly 30,000 followers. Crossing our fingers for Twitpics of the president couchsurfing to new episodes of The Bachelor.

American Jobs and Growth Agenda, Part 2: Expand American Energy

I previously covered why it?s so important for the federal government to deal with its fiscal problems. The next pillar of the U.S. Chamber?s American Jobs and Growth Agenda I?ll cover is energy. In his State of American Business address, U.S. Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue called energy, ?a third bucket to draw from to address our deficits and debt.? Producing more American energy can not only create jobs, and boost economic growth, but also pump new revenues into government coffers. Here?s how.

First, note that in the past year, the number of oil and natural gas jobs has increased 6.5%. At the same time, full-time wages in the mining, oil, and gas explorations sectors increased 6% according to salary comparison website PayScale. More people working at higher pay means more tax revenue.

The energy boom has created jobs beyond the energy sector. Jobs have been created from construction, pipe manufacturing, sand mining, transportation, support services, restaurants, etc.? An IHS study determined that 1.7 million jobs are supported directly and indirectly by shale energy in energy-producing and non-energy production states, and it?s expected to rise to 3.5 million by 2035.

Second, increased energy production boosts the coffers of strapped state governments.?For example, Pennsylvania brought in $200 million from impact fee revenue in 2012. When you include taxes from workers and from royalties and fees, IHS found that shale energy contributed $63 billion in federal, state, and local taxes last year, and estimates that $2.5 trillion in revenue will be generated by 2035.

This new revenue is just from shale energy on state and private lands. As the Institute for Energy Research shows, billions would be raised ?from the sale, rent and royalties of energy and minerals on government lands.? But that would require policies to reverse the recent trend of falling oil and gas production on federal lands such as opening up more areas to offshore drilling.

America?s energy security depends on more than just oil and natural gas production. We need infrastructure to transport it; we need to be able to export it; and we need to develop alternative energy sources, including nuclear energy and a facility to store nuclear waste. Here are some policies to make these things happen:

    1. Regulators should approve permits to build facilities to export?liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal?to energy-thirsty markets in Asia and Europe.
    2. The federal government should?adhere to the law and establish a permanent repository for nuclear waste?to remove?decades of policy uncertainty surrounding the nuclear energy.
    3. The administration should resist anti-energy activists and approved construction of the northern route of the Keystone XL pipeline.

I?ll conclude with Tom Donohue who sums up the opportunities at hand:

By fully embracing America?s energy opportunity, we can accelerate growth, create millions of new jobs, free ourselves from some less-than-stable global suppliers, and create huge new revenues for government?which will help reduce budget deficits.
